hi, i'm announcing the latest version of PSPSeq, a homebrew synthesizer and sequencer for the Sony PSP handheld system. some of the features include:

- up to 16 independent audio tracks per song
- a wide variety of synthesizers from traditional virtual analog and FM to Karplus-Strong and unique digital oscillators with parameter controls rarely seen in commercial synths
- WAV file playback with looping, pitch shift, and configurable start/end points
- many FX algorithms from digital filters and waveshapers to bitmasks and decimation
- all synthesizer parameters can be set to unique values on a per-step basis
- step sequencer with configurable step length, swing, highly accurate BPM, and tap tempo
- probabilistic sequencing: the decision to retrigger to be based on a 0-100% probability rather than a boolean yes/no operation
- song sequencing with 100 different loops per song, 1000 measures per song, and loop repeat capability
- load and save of synthesizer presets between songs
- record loops and songs to WAV

to run this program on your PSP it needs to be running custom firmware. googling the topic will lead to countless posts, videos, and files to help you take care of that.

if you have any questions feel free to ask me directly or join the PSPSeq user's group here:

I tried unsuccefully to install the custom firmware a while back and it was so complicated I never got it done. Plus I was worried I'd "brick" it. Or end up not being able to use my games.

Wow, really cool concept. Have it downloaded now and am playing with it. The sequencing is quite intuitive, but is there any way to preview a sound? It's definitely not intuitive to change parameters without hearing what they are doing... would be nice to have a simple trigger button somewhere.

@morelia - i'm not sure when you undertook updating to custom firmware but it's a fair bit easier now. basically you use a specially programmed battery (called a pandora's battery) and a memory stick with the custom firmware (called a magic memory stick) to install the custom firmware. once you have these two pieces it's a snap. that said, to make a pandora's battery you need a PSP already programmed with custom firmware. a bit of a chicken and the egg situation. there are two ways around it:

1. buy a pandora's battery online, or the datel tool battery.
2. find someone local who already has these things and will program the firmware for you. craigslist is a great place to look. shouldn't cost more than $20 to get it done.

once you've got the custom firmware installing homebrew and firmware updates is easy. i may be a bit biased, but i'd say it's totally worth it. ;)

@zircon - the way i preview sounds for shorter instruments is to create the pattern first without paying much attention to the actual sound. then i go into the menu system to access all the synth parameters. then i'll hold the triangle button to modify all parameters at once so i get to hear changes very quickly (at the next triggered step). once i have something close to what i want i edit each step individually.

there's a pretty good discussion on these topics here:

but you are right, there's no immediate retrigger option.
