Does anyone know of a free program that slows down music with good quality and stays in the same key? I need it for accurate transcriptions.

thanks in advance! :)

Audacity!

Effect - change tempo.

Or change speed by -50% will half the speed and pitch down a whole octave.

cool, i checked it out and it sounds great... i was thinkin maybe something with a realtime slider (for tempo), but this works just fine

Funny thing is that Audacity is my main audio editor, and I didn't even notice that it had this feature. haha.

Check out Transcribe! (http://www.seventhstring.com/) Free demo but cheap.

It has a slider that will slow down to 5% and the pitches are still clearly recognizable. I've used it to transcribe and learn Charlie Parker solos (and several others) and it's absolutely brilliant. It's one of those great pieces of software that only does one thing and does it really, really well.

I've tried working with Audacity, the audio editor in Traction and Windows Media Player (View > Enhancements > Play Speed Settings). WMP is OK if you don't need to slow down more than about 70% but more than that and it distorts the sound too much.

Wow, I kinda wish we had that in the olden days. We could take things off (33 1/3 rpm) albums, and play them @ 16 rpm. (Which of course would sound more or less an octave lower.) And that was that.

BUT, the fact of pain in the ass of this process, incl. the vinyl wearing out pretty quickly, meant you got real good at remembering whole licks before you tried 'em on for size, by necessity, and ended up being great ear-training.
