Omnisphere - Post purchase Questions, Issues, Problems

Hey mods and others - I know the mods are trying to keep the omnisphere chatter to a few threads. But now that people are receiving/installing/using Omnisphere I thought a thread for POST purchase discussions might be useful. I'm sure the mods will delete/lock/move if they disagree...

Of course, we should contact Spectrasonics directly if we have serious issues, but forums are for enthusiasts who like to help each other out. So in GOOD spirit, here goes.

I received Omnisphere today. Install took 5 hours, but everything was smooth.

In the two hours I've been able to use it, I've had it lock up once (wouldn't produce any sounds until I restarted host) and it crashed Ableton Live once. Haven't been able to nail down why, but I've got my eyes open now.

Have a question about the File Directory view. This view has the four folder/file windows at the top, with the "library" listed on the left. I thought these might coincide with the directory structure on the harddrive, but comparing the two, i see no similarity, so this library organization must be managed by omnisphere.

I find it odd that only three of the libraries (Modern Hybrid, One shot hits and Traditional) result in any sub libraries showing in the windows to the right. Further, Modern Hybrid's single sub folder has a single patch (Sterling Glass Scraper). It just seems a bit odd to me. It would seem, with four possible levels of organization here, only one is used, and that very minimally. Is this how everyone elses look? If so, I'll happily accept it. Just seems odd...

The other thing I am finding quite annoying is the pop up "Notice, cannot load part while load is in progress" when flying through presets. Quite bothersome to have to constantly dismiss a dialog when trying to preview sounds. Anyone else notice this, or find a way to suppress it?

I appreciate the pointer, but I prefer to do all my shopping on as few boards as possible. I hang here and gearslutz. thats enough for me.

I understand what you're saying here as well and I think most people feel the same way. Usually those dedicated boards end up with a fewer clients but with a strong sentiment for the stuff. There's one for the UAD-1 card as well and I like that one a lot, it is nice, clean and to the point.

IMO, Spectrasonics should really have a proper back-upped forum somewhere, such that they recommend people using. Preferably here at KVR.

It's annoying if the general Instruments forum is used as an ongoing Omnisphere forum.

I suggested this exact same thing in another thread as I really still do not like the Yahoo and Northern sounds split forum set up. The Yahoo forum is terrible to navigate. The information that many would like to read is spread here and there. A simple central forum like Image line, Zynewave and Cakewalk e.t.c have, really for me would be much easier to access and use.

One can only imagine how helpful a central forum would have been had it been available just before Omni's release or even as far back as NAMM.

Even a dedicated KVR forum for Spectrasonics would be a simple central point on KVR for Spectrasonics related threads.

Having said all that, clearly Spectrasonics current approach seems to work for them and they continue to produce top draw products so I guess if having a central forum is not (in their opinion) a good idea then I guess that is best for Spectrasonics.

We've seen WAY too many people abuse the company forums of all the companies that do that. It's a massive timesoak and a real mess and so we've never done it for that reason.

Our approach of "voluntary staff partcipation" on other user forums works much better and keeps things more civil. If people get too nasty, we can just not participate for awhile since it's not our official forum.

If the "timesoak" aspect is that damaging then it must be better for them to operate as they do then even with so many threads to track on at least three different forums. I of course do not know better than Eric so I must assume the way they operate (forum wise) is surely the best way for them.

I would sympathize with Mr Persing on the issue since the observation is astute, the nature of the forums is as described, and its a different business than a support ticket system. The freewheelin enthusiasts can drive it pretty well though, as demonstrated in the UAD forums.

I'm not sure KVR is the optimal place since a dedicated forum lets you customize the information and structure it in a different way. I wouldn't want to move the UAD forums here, I don't think it would fit.

as reported above, I've had one freeze and one crash in 4 hours. I'm running a quad w/2GB RAM. Win XP SP3.

Judging by the tech support calls we've received so far this week, there have been some reported cases of users having technical problems, but not many. There have been many calls and emails, but they are mostly administrative ones, for example people needing help finding their serial numbers.

Im not want to be rude, but I cant understand your question (which I think I have seen in some other omni thread).

If you are thinking about to purchase a $500 piece of software would not make much more sense to purchase an additional 1 gb of ram which is only $20 and be in the safe side???

Maybe you can run it but its very much obvious that with that limited ram you will get in to trouble with Omni or with many others softsynths very easily.

Not wanting to cross-post- but this thread seems more appropriate. For any users, are you running Omnisphere on any AMD processors. I have a dedicated HP Pavillion Laptop with an AMD Turion TL-58 dual-core processor (1.8ghz) and 2GB of RAM. This is my dedicated VSTi laptop I use for live playing. What I don't know if this is powerful enough to run Omnisphere (I wouldn't be hosting it through a DAW- I would be running it native with nothing else). I don't mind a 50% or greater cpu utilization as well- it can take it all for all I care- just no glitches.

Also, does it have an economy mode (I think Atmosphere has something like this so I would assume Omni does as well).

Well I give up on my AMD question- no response from Spec when emailed directly and nothing here. Should have never touched AMD- stupid me. i guess I will sit and wait for some AMD user to confirm Omnisphere's performance.
At least I can use the money to fill up my tank a few times.
