Omnisphere - Post purchase Questions, Issues, Problems

Well I give up on my AMD question- no response from Spec when emailed directly and nothing here. Should have never touched AMD- stupid me. i guess I will sit and wait for some AMD user to confirm Omnisphere's performance.
At least I can use the money to fill up my tank a few times.

You can't expect them to have tried every processor.

This suggests it should run fairly well - I'm only going to be running on 4400 x2, which still runs most things fine. Otherwise you'll have to wait until someone with the exact same machine tries it

Omnisphere does not work on iMac meeting stated systems requirements on Spectrasonics website.

Sorry your having trouble. I also apologize for the delay in tech support getting back to you, the overall traffic right now is extraordinarily high obviously. We've added more people to handle the tech support volume, so hopefully they'll be able to get back to you today.

You are indeed at the very minimum requirements, maybe a little lower than minimum because we did all our testing and optimizing on a Dual G5 2ghz tower and the iMac is indeed slower than that computer.

Omnisphere works OK on G5 Towers, but a G5 iMac might not be up to your needs with Omnisphere.
(of course Omnisphere screams on the current iMacs).

So I'd say there are a couple of solutions to consider (besides the obvious solution of updating your computer):

1. Work with tech support and we can try to optimize your system to get the best possible performance our of it. It will still be limited of course, but we can probably get you going better than you are currently.

2. Return Omnisphere and we'd be happy to offer you a full refund. Then you could wait until you have a more current computer before diving into Omnisphere-land.

I hope that's helpful and once again, I'm apologize if the system reqs were misleading in any way and that your first experience with the instrument wasn't very satisfying.

Have just installed on Quad-Core Q6600 system (ADK) running at 3.0 gHz with 4GB RAM. Vista (32bit) Home Premium. This is an extremely stable system for me.

Crashed Kore 2 Standalone twice within the first 10 patch browses. Then crashed Sonar 7 PE once.

Then I installed the two updates (sounds/patches) from the site.

Have only played with it another 30 minutes...no more crashes so far. There is some weirdness with recalling patches after saving them as "KoreSounds" in Kore2...like Omnisphere get's confused and recalls the wrong thing until you unload and reload it. Not a huge deal, I just like patch browsing in Kore2 so I can immediately save off and categorize in that format for later use in composing.

I must say this thing sounds amazing. Like Atmosphere on steroids.

*** EDIT *** after playing with it for 2 more hours, no crashes in Sonar or Kore 2. I'm addicted.

[This is my first post in this excellent forum. I've read the many complaints about too many threads about Omnisphere, so I am posting in this thread hoping it's not dead ]

Here are some of my thoughts about Omnisphere having fooled around with it for about 4 days now.

I too am having problems understanding the File Directory View. I'm not even sure I understand the logical use of the Patch Browser. Am I supposed to get different search results searching the File Directory as apposed to the Patch Browser for an instrument? And it confuses me that many of the patchnames are so "creative" instead of simply suggesting what type of instrument I should be expecting.

But what is much worse is that I now actually feel stupid and somewhat cheated after nine months of excited anticipation, waiting for this Plugin of all plugins. (Spetrasonics couldn't have named it "Omni"- without knowing the latin meaning of the word!)

The vast majority of the Omnisphere library is found in the Soundsource Browser, where you only load sounds without the wrapping of all the filter- and effects settings, that ultimately makes a sound useful for instant use. Making proper use of that huge library it seems to me requires comprehensive knowledge about the programming of synthesizers. It's actually only synthprogramming clever people that can make use of the biggest part of Omnispheres sound library. As mainly a preset-guy this makes me feel stupid about buying Omnisphere.

And with the advertising of Omnisphere having "10 times" the amount of what Atmosphere had, I feel cheated (I'm possibly just plain dumb not fully having understood the concept of Omnisphere). But with Atmosphere every element in the soundbank was a patch with all the suggested wrappings of filters etc. for instant use. Very cool that you could mess around with the wrapping - but you didn't have to. This is not at all the case with Omnisphere. And for me this is definately not having "10 times" the amount of sounds/patches whatever Atmosphere had! Can you imagine the dissapointment?

I DO understand that Omnisphere was built to give users huge flexibility and unending possibilities, but I simply don't understand why the 2700 soundsources weren't shipped with a patch at least for suggestion of use - like Atmosphere was constructed.

All that said, I do want to praise Spectrasonics for making Omnisphere - and especially for designing the arpeggiator that works with chords! I have searched for years after this feature and it blows my mind, why this hasn't been invented with this ease of use before.

Last about performance:
I running Omnisphere on my P4 3.2 Ghz, 2 Gb Ram, XP Pro SP3, Audiophile 2492 soundcard, Cubase SX 2, Omni-library on separate internal SATA HD than OS on same type disc. Omnisphere loads in about 15 secs. 300-400 Mb patches load in about 10-13 secs.

As I kinda expected with my "old" DAW, I get glitches and "clippings". So far I have only loaded one patch at a time and also tried loading some multis. The latter went surprisingly well. But this puzzles me: I get them for instance when I play the out-of-this-world-beatiful patch called "Play me foreva" with 20 voices, lots of sustain pedal - but my CPU doesn't hit more than 70% usage. It never peaks towards 100%, so why do I get the clipping?

Discovering Omnisphere way back in January I knew, I had to get a faster pc. I've saved up, it's ordered and on it's way now. I am upgrading to Cubase 4 on:
Asus P5E Deluxe, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 GH, 4 Gb DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 2xWinston Digital Velociraptor 10.000 rpm Sata discs, Audiophile 2492 (until I can afford the "MOTU 828mkIII Firewire"), XP Pro SP3. I sincerily hope that this setup will make me able to run Omnisphere smoothly preferably in more instances.

Hey mods and others - I know the mods are trying to keep the omnisphere chatter to a few threads. But now that people are receiving/installing/using Omnisphere I thought a thread for POST purchase discussions might be useful. I'm sure the mods will delete/lock/move if they disagree...

Of course, we should contact Spectrasonics directly if we have serious issues, but forums are for enthusiasts who like to help each other out. So in GOOD spirit, here goes.

I received Omnisphere today. Install took 5 hours, but everything was smooth.

In the two hours I've been able to use it, I've had it lock up once (wouldn't produce any sounds until I restarted host) and it crashed Ableton Live once. Haven't been able to nail down why, but I've got my eyes open now.

Have a question about the File Directory view. This view has the four folder/file windows at the top, with the "library" listed on the left. I thought these might coincide with the directory structure on the harddrive, but comparing the two, i see no similarity, so this library organization must be managed by omnisphere.

I find it odd that only three of the libraries (Modern Hybrid, One shot hits and Traditional) result in any sub libraries showing in the windows to the right. Further, Modern Hybrid's single sub folder has a single patch (Sterling Glass Scraper). It just seems a bit odd to me. It would seem, with four possible levels of organization here, only one is used, and that very minimally. Is this how everyone elses look? If so, I'll happily accept it. Just seems odd...

The other thing I am finding quite annoying is the pop up "Notice, cannot load part while load is in progress" when flying through presets. Quite bothersome to have to constantly dismiss a dialog when trying to preview sounds. Anyone else notice this, or find a way to suppress it?

This is true, but like you have seen, there has already been one update adding more patches, and another one should be available very soon. My understanding is that Spectrasonics will release more patches in the future that take advantage of more soundsources. But you are right, there could have been more patches using more soundsources right from the start. On the other hand, this way Omni will feel like a fresh instrument every time we get new patches.. hopefully.

Good questions, hopefully someone will give us some official info. I admit that the whole business of Atmosphere and other patches not making it into the first release, and then reading about them being released "soon" in the middle of some overlong KVR forum thread... that could have been handled a little better.
