I would advise a little caution when doing this, as NastyVSD alters the fabric of the sound quite a bit, both in terms of stereo widening and a kinda smearing effect depending on drive. Not something that should be used on sounds that need to retain absolute solidity and bite.gmitch wrote:Nasty VSD could be used as a limiter in alot of cases.....It has both clipping and a limiter, if set correctly it behaves like one with a bit of color......

Ahh, a developer with principles- cool!bootsie wrote:Since I'm not in that "loudness thing" I don't think I will ever made such a "transparent" limiter. A "nasty" one is already there in NastyVSD (or RescueAE as already mentioned) and does a perfect job on it (at least to me) in that funky combination with the input saturation.
Hey, bootsie-dude- thanks, again, for sharing your dev interests and efforts.
Bootsie "kicks" a**!
I've got nothing to sell...am I on the right site?

I absolutely agree on that. Be aware: this is a creative mixing device, not some mastering sort of thing. I thought the "nasty" label of this series should have already claimed that...Arksun wrote:I would advise a little caution when doing this, as NastyVSD alters the fabric of the sound quite a bit, both in terms of stereo widening and a kinda smearing effect depending on drive. Nonetheless, on my own I'm mixing through it while inserting this device on the stereo out.

Hi Bootsy,
let me use this thread to say a big " Thank You ! " for all your plugins (sonically and technically) and your generosity to make them free for all.
They sure hold their own nicely alongside my UADs and Duende, filling in some very important gaps in the palette.
Stellar job !
Though they all have their specific uses, my favourite is the Nasty CS, closely followed by Tessla SE and Nasty SD.
Since I asked for it specifically, the handling of the concentric pots works fine, thanks.
And the mix of filters and EQ bands is very tasteful indeed.
A true Swiss Army Knife.
Cheers,
susiwong

I'd just like to know your starting settings on that stereo out master track, I mean, "Drive=?" "Gain=?", etc. Thanks a lot for your time!

Agreed, but some of us want that "dirt" and it does add this to the sound..... Depending on how much u drive it,not sure about the stereo widening though....

I just use the default (settings are zero) plus the limiter in 'fast' position.Mercado_Negro wrote: I'd just like to know your starting settings on that stereo out master track, I mean, "Drive=?" "Gain=?", etc. Thanks a lot for your time!
Then I'm leveling the mix so that the input stage VU clearly is in the red range.

im using a paralell set up of VSD, i had to put it on both the dry and wet channels to avoid phase issues, but i drive one to death and mix it in. sounds great if you add some eq boost before the distortion.
Channel strip is the first thing going on about every new track i create.

Many thanks for your great plugins, Bootsie!
First I didn't give them the attention they deserved.. but you did a fantastic job with all of 'em.. Dankeschön!
Especially BootEQ, NastyVSD, Tessla and NastyHF are really really really great!
NastyCS is also pretty good, but the aforementioned ones do the jobs I need and I get better use out of their user interfaces.
I played around with BootEQ on my inet-machine and noticed it sounded really smooth.. the smoothness I was used from the Neve 1073 on my UAD1s.. Due to the monitoring possibilities here I wasn't sure but I ported it over to my DAW and made some shootouts comparing it with the 1073.. you know what.. I will sell my UAD1s!
If you think I'm fooling myself, I really tested back and forth and came to the conlusion that BootEQ - though needing a bit more fiddling - gets to the point where the tiny small differences in smoothness don't justify keeping my UAD1s.
Also the UAD1s are causing me trouble with Samplitude 9 on my DAW..
The only other plugins I would keep the UAD1s for are the LA2A and 88RS.. But there's a limiting amplifier called DVS Leveling Amp which is an acceptable compensation for the LA2A and there are many other nice comps than can fill the compression gaps the UAD1 leaves and hm....
you know if you'd built a nice dynamic section into an extended version of the BootEQ I could forget the 88RS
You could call it BootStrip.. you know, like BootStrap
It would be an instant classic
hehe
Cheers

Bootsie, i have recently notice that when u send a hard panned signal to VSD there seems to be some signal on the opposite side....Is this crosstalk or something else....I'm using Nuendo 3 and i am sending a dry signal thru a bus 2 the master bus and the bus shows the right visual, but the master bus shows some signal on the opposite side (where VSD is inserted...)This as well as your other plugins r just GREAT, but i just came across this.....THANX 4 your reply in advance.....
