Consider Helix...
How do you try/buy/download Helix? The Audjoo website doesn't have any pricing/ordering info and the download link just says "Coming Soon". Some of the testimonial comments suggest that it's freeware (?)

Edit: nevermind - I found it in the KVR downloads. Looks like it's still in beta phase. I'll give it a go this evening.

Edit (again): nope, the KVR link just takes you to the Helix page, where you can't download or buy it.

I demoed sylenth and i tried Vaz 2010 again today and i have to say i prefer the sound of Vaz and it's cheaper. It's also pretty cool that you can upgrade to Vaz modular later http://www.kiresounds.se/catalog.1.html  and are able to load your own effects... Anyway, my vote goes to Vaz! :D

Vaz does sound good, but it's only for Windows and I think the interface is horrible. The sound kind of reminds me of the new fxpansion synths that have been in beta testing for ages with out a release date. Guess I'll just have to wait for fxpansion...

Then there's EQ'ing a patch or tweaking it--that's what a person should be doing to guarantee a good mix anyway, right?

I don't think CronoX3 gets the props it deserves. Seriously, I'd take CronoX over Sylenth anyday without question. I personally didn't find much use for Massive, but it sounds WONDERFUL. The Butterfly Stance patch was used on Nas' new track called "Hero". Apparently someone found a gem in there that I didn't.

Anywho...

Blue
Albino
CronoX
Massive
Korg Legacy....especially Analog 2008
SOOOO many banks for Reason
Vanguard
Rapture
Z3ta
Virus Powercore....all day.

All are marvelous SYNTHS with a beautiful sound all their own.

pretty much agree with all of this. And Nexus sounds better than sylenth by a mile. I know refx is hated here but it's the truth. I have no reason to lie.
Yes sir. I wouldn't lie either. It's all personal opinion though of course. I just can't get into Sylenth. Doesn't seem like there's anything extraordinary in Sylenth that I can't conjure up in Reason. I don't even own some of the stuff on that list, but I know they definitely impressed me much more than Sylenth.

And now that September 15th has passed I'd add Omnisphere to that list for sure.

I agree, but at >2X the price of Sylenth1, you wouldn't expect a fair comparison between Omnisphere and Sylenth1.

That isn't the point. The OP asked what sounds as good, and not what sounds as good but doesn't cost more than x.

The interface isn't the prettiest but it's ok to work with on a decent size screen. I think it's on a par with Sylenth but it's cheaper and more flexible with a similar cpu hit. I read that there is supposed to be a mac version coming but no idea when...

True, but I already addressed my opinion on that point in my earlier posts (i.e., Sylenth is definitely NOT the best sounding synth IMO and is over-priced for what I consider to be a very limited, run-of-the-mill synth). That said, my point above is what it is - Sylenth1 is $100 synth with a $200 price tag and shouldn't be compared to a $450 synth.

Sorry to offend all of you Sylenth1 fanboys with such an "obvious" observation, but, geez, get over it already - Sylenth1 is NOT the ultimate synth for everybody.

I don't want any trouble...no sir...

Just admitting that I'm not exactly a fan of Sylenth.

I've seen Zebra compared to everything from farting while snapping fingers in Z-formation to a Hans Zimmer orchestral selection.

Wasn't too long ago that Alchemy was compared to Omnisphere...

I don't think price has anything to do with the OP's question.

Link me then to a VA synth demo sample, without external eq/fx/other synths that sounds better than this:
http://www.arksun-sound.com/music/Arksu ... lenth1.mp3
http://www.arksun-sound.com/music/sylen ... ndbank.mp3

Seriously, I'd love to hear it !
Sylenth1 is NOT the ultimate synth for everybody.
Every synth brings its own use to the table. If you're looking for a non sample based VA with the best analogue sound, I don't think there's anything better than Sylenth1. That doesn't make it THE ultimate synth for everybody though.

So you're:

1) telling me that my opinion is wrong,
2) asking me to prove the un-proveable by convincing you that your opinion is wrong, and
3) stating your case using a low-quality mp3 of some less-than-awe-inspiring trance presets?

Alrighty then. You've convinced me.
