Ken Scott Collection Coming for BFD and Kontakt!

Here's a little sneak peak on the sample sessions done with Ken Scott, engineer and producer who has recorded The Beatles (White Album and Magical Mystery Tour), David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust), Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Dixie Dregs, Missing Persons, Duran Duran, Devo, Procol Harum, George Harisson, Lou Reed (Take A Walk on the Wild Side), America, Elton John and more.
We have drum kits from Billy Cobham, Bob Siebenberg, Woody Woodmansey, Terry Bozzio and Rod Morgenstein coming out in BFD2.1 this year and later in Kontakt Player format. Very distinct sounds, vintage flavored and particular to these drummers, the specific gear (the same gear they used back when they made those records) and of course Ken. These will also be the first I-Map drum kits ever released in BFD and they will also have I-Map midi grooves from these 5 drummers... there's even more news than that but since the video teasers are started I thought I should show you all an advance peak:

Very interesting! IMHO Ken Scott is the most underrated producer ever... when you look beyond the obvious Beatles/Bowie connection, and listen to Happy the Man, Supertramp, Jeff Beck, the Dixie Dregs... WOW! I'm psyched for this one.

I agree. After getting to know him I can understand why. He's very humble and never was much of a self-promoter back in the day. He'd just quietly go from one classic album to the next without talking about all of the things he'd done before. I mean, surprisingly when we were interviewing Rod Morgenstein and asked him if he was thrilled to work with Ken because he had recorded The Beatles apparently Rod never even KNEW! The Dixie Dregs were loving Ken because he had recorded the ground breaking Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Beck and Billy Cobham jazz/fusion albums. He had never said to them once "Well, ehem, when I recorded The White Album..." He'd just show up and do his thing. Very much the "Real Deal" when it comes to making records. Gets on his hands and knees to fix the miking on the drum or taping the inside of the bass drum. You can see it even today in the current videos from the sample sessions. That must have been what it was like. It didn't matter how many gold records he had he would be working closely with the artists as if they were the most important thing and do whatever it took to get them to sound great. Looking back now all of these musicians are in awe of what he actually did in his career. It's only when you take a step back and realize "Holy crap! This guy recorded some of the best classic rock albums!"
It's a unique career to say the least and it is fascinating in how diverse his musical taste were to go all the way from The Beatles to Syd Barrett to America to Bowie to Elton to Lou Reed to Mahavishnu to Devo and Missing Persons... that's all over the map! Roots of rock and psychedlica to the beginnings of jazz fusion and punk/new wave. I can't think of any producer that has spanned that wide a range of styles. It's certainly very rare.

How'd I miss this? Now this one is so far up my alley it's riduclous. I've got enough questions about this to negate the need for a press release:
Is this going to be a single Ken Scott pack with all the different drum sounds, or are these going to be one off packs for each drummer/sound? Will it be just one kit for each drummer? Or one kit with some extra pieces (different snares for example)? Or a couple of kits for each drummer/sound? Is this going to take advantage of some of the BFD2.1 specific features like custom channel configurations, and variable articulations (for instance, Mick Woodmansey starts playing the metal rim of the toms, that could be an articulation in 2.1)? Since BFD allows for custom keymaps, the iMapping will just be a keymap preset right. I mean, I can just use my own keymap and still be ok right? It looks like this is going to include some 60's Bowie (one of my favorite drum sounds) and Supertramp sounds, but anything more Beatlesey
(I did see that Beatles Ludwig black pearl kick drum). Will Ken be doing BFD2.1 mixer presets? How many velocity layers on average per kit piece type? Finally, any word on price and a release ETA?

Initially it will be all 5 drummers and then there will be something (perhaps all of it or perhaps selections) available individually.
Will it be just one kit for each drummer? Or one kit with some extra pieces (different snares for example)? Or a couple of kits for each drummer/sound?
The basis for their drum sounds was to specifically capture the same character sound that Ken recorded with them back in the day. They are based around one kit per drummer but with extras depending on the drummer. Extra snare, extra percussion... we recorded a lot of things but we're in the process of creating it still so I can't say yet exactly what each version will have.
Is this going to take advantage of some of the BFD2.1 specific features like custom channel configurations, and variable articulations (for instance, Mick Woodmansey starts playing the metal rim of the toms, that could be an articulation in 2.1)?
Yes and even some surprises in BFD format. Custom channels taken advantage plus even some other things that haven't been done before in BFD. So the kits will be cool in that format.
Since BFD allows for custom keymaps, the iMapping will just be a keymap preset right. I mean, I can just use my own keymap and still be ok right?
Actually, this is one of the coolest features of BFD2.1. Its remapping is very smart. The patterns go to the articulations directly and it doesn't matter where they are mapped. However, we DO have additional custom articulations that will only work with our own grooves. But it will work with most other grooves you may have as well.

There is a sample of a 60's Ludwig Downbeat kit and also a nice Nigel Olsen style kit for the 70's Elton John sound as well. But which collections they'll come in or what details are not known at this time. Ken is also coming out to our studio in Miami in the next two weeks to record some more things for a future release (like an add on). SR is also going over to England to record in some pretty amazing studios as well next month but I can't really mention too much about that just yet. However... it's pretty cool and we'll be video taping it.
Will Ken be doing BFD2.1 mixer presets?
Yes.
How many velocity layers on average per kit piece type?
Well, at the moment each Ken Scott kit in BFD format is about 8 gigs in size and has an average of maybe 80 velocities per key or something like that.
Finally, any word on price and a release ETA?
Well, it is being worked on now. However, we're already done with previous Studio ProFiles drummer libraries (and a Kontakt Player plug-in that plays them ALL will be announced next week so more news on that soon). So, those kits from great drummers like John Blackwell, Jerry Marotta, Danny Gottlieb, Ed Greene etc. will be released next month or sooner... and also the grooves in multi-track form which is really cool and I will get into this aspect of what we've been doing in the Studio ProFiles series all this time. The Ken Scott Collection is a MAJOR undertaking and he doesn't just slap his name on it. He's involved heavily and there's mixing sessions and a lot of stages for the drum kits and the grooves. So, I don't have an ETA or even the final price except that it is more than the other BFD libraries out there in BFD format and probably less than Ocean Way Gold for Kontakt format with grooves (and the grooves in Kontakt are in Beatmode with the ability to mic mix and that is something to see... and hear). So, in the $400-800 territory and there might be several versions. Also, at a certain point various kits (maybe a more downloadble sized 2 gig set) will be available ala carte perhaps for something like a hundred bucks each or so. Maybe less with membership discounts of course and epointz or whatever. I don't expect the Ken Scott drummer individual kits to be available though until some time next year. However we DO plan on having downloadable Studio ProFiles kits in Kontakt and BFD format THIS year from other drummers and other style sessions.

That's just a "sample" of Ken Scott's Producing and/or Engineering for those that didn't know. Some major classics in there!
