Remove the Emboss effect and use Edge Highlight instead. Set offset to something like 5, and density to around -30. Kinda gets the job done, although I would personally want to fine-tune it a little more, and I might be inclined to break the effect down into several more layers for better control.

Thanks Limeflavour and dblue. Yup, getting rid of the emboss and using the shadow features did the trick. :)

very realistic, more than the one I made from a real knob photo : potard_vert.knob

I made a knob!

Here's the corresponding knob file:

A knob

This is the first usable knob I've done, so I'm quite proud of it, lol. :D

P.S. I think I may need to adjust it so that it's not quite so bright in the upper left and not quite so dark in the lower right.

looks good Leslie.

Hi Leslie,
Thank you for this knob, very beautiful :) .

Though I won't make as nice knobs as yours, may I write down one small remark ?
I don't think the metal circle should rotate with the button. I think you'd better let it still, in phase with main lighting direction (i.e. -45°).

Don't you agree ?

Best regrards,

Art.

I do agree, thanks for the suggestion. I knew there was something odd about the way it looked when I rotated it. Making the metal circle stationary solved the problem.

I should be in bed. This program is addicting.

An experiement:

This represents a push button. There are two images, one when the button is up and the other when it is pressed. Ideally, you'd probably render the two images seperately, but I wanted to see how it looked going back and forth between pressed/non-pressed.

Push Button "Knob"

The pressed image may need work so that it looks more, erm, pressed.

The new buzz in town! It's really a great value! Thx g200kg !!!

Yep, may be border would be thinner and/or reversed, i.e. lighting is on right/bottom edge as if it was flat or lowered.
Never tried it. My buttons are sort of touch type, they lit or dim.

I've updated the push button:

I don't think this looks realistic yet. It's as though the button is made of soft plastic and is actually changing shape when pressed. That's not what I want, but this is a start.

the edges only become flatter if that is the type of pad-button you want, so make the dark edge about -25% from the median and the light about +25% when depressed rather than the current -+100%. it can help to slightly dim the inside/surface (but keep the edges relative without dimming) to increase the depressed look. you could also add a edge shading about 10% width of the edge and shade the surface of the button in the opposite direction (top-left dark, bottom-right light) to get a bent-in plastic look.

if ever in doubt, model it in a 3d app like blender and check the lighting.

Just goofing around in SkinMan using the above controls.
