well, did they use a melotron or sample it?
It's not what you use, it's how you use it...

Q: Where does the choir sound come from?
A: Most likely the choir sound on Blue Monday is the same as the sound on Kraftwerk's track "Uranium" (off the album "Radioactivity", 1975). Whether or not New Order sampled Uranium, or used the same sound that was included with the Emu Emulator, is not fully known. Kraftwerk used a Mellotron to create the sound. However, Roger Lyons mentions in an article in Sound on Sound (April 2004) that "the vocal choir part on 'Blue Monday' was sampled, and it was probably one of the first instances of someone sampling something from someone else's record. New Order originally used an Emulator II to play their samples live..."

ok, you're the geek... :hihi:

Mellotron I think :) Oh I thought you meant Jarres stuff...sorry brain not working today.

Kriminal is right they sampled it off a Kraftwerk track...I think.

But seriously...for those that think it can be done...just the bassline... using vsti's please up some examples.

Just a bass drum with bassline, oh and don't compress the shit out of it. Keep it the same level roughly as the original track.

Good geek. I have to deduct some geek points though as you did'nt know but had to search for it. Plus us true geeks are a bit dissapointed that you did'nt notice the obvious error in that quote. Kraftwerk did'nt use a Melltron. It was an Orchestron. :D

Going back to the OP i was going to give it a try but i'm so hungover i don't think i'll bother. At least not today.

I'm not much of a synthprogrammer but i've been known to get some things right. The bass sound should be fairly easy i think. The real bitch to get right would be the first "melody" sound. It has some really wonky modulation going on that could be really hard to recreate. Sounds like an analog synth that is near breaking.

anyone had any luck with this? PLEASE? ;-)

Did you try two slightly detuned saw osc with a fast decaying LP filter envelope like I said? Cause that's all it is. Promise.

It's not only the moog, its all.
It's the desk, the compression,it's the eq,it's the seq, it's john robey, it's arthur baker, it's the mastering by herb Powers (me thinks)

That will give you this sound....

Post

yeah i did try it on the minimoog v but not getting it.. i'm not very good with synthesis, i find it all very complicated. anyone had any luck making a patch like this?

Post

i'm still having no luck with this lol, anyone got any patches for the minimoog so i can see how it's created (well, as close as possible that is)!

anyone? pretty please? lol :help:

I just don't think it's possible to match the sound of classic synth tunes (done with hardware) with virtual synths.

Blue Monday
Oxygene
Equinox
Vangekis
Tangerine Dream
Kraftwerk

I think it would sound weak in comparison. I'm not stating this to wind people up, it truly is my belief and I would be happy to be proved wrong.

If anyone here could copy the bassline from "the robots" Kraftwerk using vsti's (no samples , has to be synthesis) I would be very impressed if not astounded.

It's a simple patch on analog synths so shouldn't be too hard to get it on say any of the virtual Moog synths that are out there?

Go on up some demo's :)
SBS, the only version of Robots I can find is on you tube and not very clear; is the bass sound and the squelchy resonant higher line one-and-the same, or do you know if it's two separate sounds layered?

Thanks

Steve

Hey one martian, does this work, it's an .aupreset for the Moog V saved from the plug-in in Logic? I've had some problems with presets not working across the forum/platforms.

Blue Monday Bass 2.aupreset - 0.00MB

I'm not claiming it's great, in my mp3 of Blue Monday I can't hear it clearly in isolation anywhere, still, it might be a starting point for tweaking.

Cheers

Steve

thanks for the preset steve, sadly it doesnt really sound right either. there is something very rounded and warm about the lower end of the original ( i realise coming from old analogue gear has a lot to do with it) but i'm certain it can be recreated using one of the moog v synths). just really struggling to find something that has that deep, rounded sound, with that slight grit to the higher frequencies.
