Hi,

I really want to do a cover of a Chemical Brothers track named Surface to Air.. We want to use the original guitar riff as a basis, and add lyrics and play it live.. We want to use the Chord Progression used in the song that starts at 2.08 mins:

Does anyone know what chords they are? I'm not guitar player, and just learning music theory, so I'm having a hard time to find the right chords!

Thanks so much in advance :D

The chords are somewhat like this:

Code: Select all

| D | % | % | % |
| G | % | % | % |
| D | % | % | % |
| G | % | % | % |
| Bm | % | % | % |
| D9 | % | % | % |
You'll have to figure out the guitar riff yourself ;-)

Ah great! Did you just hear that by ear or what?

Yup. First played an A=440Hz testtone for reference. Then played the video, immediately noticed the drone tone to be a D. Goes five half-tones up to G, back to D, etc. Then that dramatic Bm and the D with emphasys on an added E (the 9).

I do this kinda stuff for over 30 years now. Don't need a guitar or keyboard in my hands to check it. It's just a matter of recognising the intervals, and that is something you can become better at with practice and training.

Awesome man. Picking out the D9 by ear. Major triads are child's play, but 9 chords require a decent ear.

I am saying this assuming you are right. I haven't listened to it.

Well, I'm not too sure. That D9 could also be written as a Asus/D chord ;-)

Inspiring stuff.. I'm glad that I can pick out certain progressions by ear in pop songs... But those are the most basic chord progressions, I wish I could do recognize more chords, but I have good hope for the future... thanks again!
