How to limit melodic range in MIDI?

I might be missing something obvious here....
What I want to do is restrict the melodic range of a VSTi by filtering out MIDI note-on messages beyond that range. This might be possible by adjusting preferences within a DAW, but I'd rather find a plug-in (with adjustable limits) to put in a chain before a VSTi. The point is to use VSTis to compose for acoustic instruments without exceeding the natural ranges of those instruments (e.g. limiting a guitar VSTi's range to E2-C#5). I'm way too lazy to memorize the range of every instrument in an orchestra.
Anyone know of such a thing?

Yeah Ive used this so I can compose on one piano roll and have a range of intruments at my disposal.

EnergyXT 1.4 had this as a built in feature...I sure miss it (and the Midi Patcher comp) in eXT2...
