hi,
im looking for some eastern or spanish music that uses things like the double harmonic scale to good effect, not just with melody but harmony too. that scale has many names but basically: C,Db,E,F,G,Ab,B.
from a subjective point of view, i want some music that feels mysterious, deep, hypnotic, and probably contempory if possible, perhaps with nice grooves and drums.
i dont have any music of this type and i just need a path into it. maybe theres a good website where i can preview lots of stuff? anyway i thought given the specificacy (word?) of the scale and harmony im looking for i should post in music theory instead of general, hope thats ok.
thanks,

Perhaps the snake Charmer song in the work "In a Persian Market" from Ketélbey.
The work has several themes. But I find the closer to what you want around the minutes: 2:56-3:11. The sheet music is pretty fine here. However the recording is too fast and you kind lost the ambience. I usually play this bit very slow, and make variations of it and sounds good.

Play fair and square!

Apparently this is called rag Bhariav (and would also match rag Kalingada) in indian music:

(includes some theory and some videos including a tutorial)
Arabic version is Maqam Hijaz Kar (and Shadd Araban, Shahnaz, Suzidil, transpositions on G, D and A respectively):

@martian do you mean far east, middle east, or near east? And from what culture are you referring to?

:/ it's a striking song, not the most musically dense, i don't have others that would be preferable online tho.
once you get used to listening for intonation, you can hear it in different cultures.
you might use an algorithmic musical application set to an eastern scale.. this will get you used to the scale, you can set the rate at different densities until you're saturated

Hi,
i have two recommendations for you:
1. Taksim Trio; Turkish contemporary folk; qanun/baglama/clarinet
2. Trio Joubran; 3 Palestinean brothers playing oud
Both are available @ iTunes. Do yourself a favour and check them out...
Det
EDIT: Oh, read your question once more and this one came to my mind, maybe the most suitable of the bunch, not so much my cup of tea tho:
Mercan Dede; turkish producer, traditional music with electronics, also previewable on itunes
Good luck...

Check out Jah Wobble's "Yulduz Bilmadim" and also the album he did with Temple of sound featuring Natascha Atlas " Shout at the Devil".She is also a great recommendation for that kind of thing. You cannot beat Jah wobble though for mixing east and west.Another wobble collaborator is guitarist Justin Adams who is of Egyptian parentage I believe.Plays lovely arabic style licks and really rocks too.
Search " Abdel Ali Slimani" ( Algerian ) on itunes and you can hear him with Wobble and Adams . You are in for a treat !
