Guys have always trying to get in my pants and ergo, to my inner self. I figured writing and performing music is quicker way to reach more of them.Ogg Vorbis wrote:Here's a mean sounding question... those of you who are doing music to express one's inner selves, why would you think anyone would care about your inner self?

I don't give two f**ks about your inner self...does that answer sound mean enough to match your question?

.. "what am i to say to the world?" is what i once sang, followed by "i just tell the things i miss".
that's my take on the subject.

My motive is simple:
I dont hear what I want to hear on radio, T.V., or otherwise, so...
I create what I wanna hear.
Although my original motive was to pick up where Faith No More left off.

It's just fun to do. When the fun factor is out, what's the point?

Good point. Popular music is full of artists singing either: 'I am feeling enormous amounts of self pity' or 'I am feeling arrogantly smug and egomaniacal'Ogg Vorbis wrote:Here's a mean sounding question... those of you who are doing music to express one's inner selves, why would you think anyone would care about your inner self?
Don't the most celebrated, timeless composers have the ability to write about the listener's inner self, not 'their own'....?

I'm with you on this. The thing is, the answer to this *huge* question is not as clear cut as the poll answers.pattonfreak1 wrote:My motive is simple:

I create the music I want to hear because of it's emotional impact etc etc, it's enjoyable. But writing music is inherently an expression of ones-self, no matter who you are. It's inescapable, much like our fingerprints, that anything we do is entirely individual and unique (even within strict genre confines or technical limitations).
I used to never consider that writing music was an emotional release for myself, until I wrote a song that actually *moved me*. It was quite profound to realise that I was writing music to find a feeling in myself, rather than to give one to others.

These days I am whoring myself out, making music for sports highlights, corporate training films and whatnot. I do this for money.
I also write pop songs and play them in a rock band and record them. This I also do for money, but also because I like playing rock songs, which latter is good as this isn't nearly as easy to turn a profit on.
I do all this so that I might have the time and skills to make the music that I want to make. This latter music is for me, and although no one quite believes this, I really don't give a shit what anyone else thinks of it. This music I write because it satisfies a need to have complete control over an artificial world; to create a universe that obeys laws of my own making, but that also meets a vague and undefinable standard of 'sounding cool' to me.
Creating such music, and listening to it really loud, satisfies a basic need in my system. It isn't social, and to construe it as 'expressing emotion' would be completely mistaken.
It's about playing god.
Being a composer is about playing god.

The funny thing is that I could easily answer all of the above.... Basically the reason why I write an album is because I want to share an universal truth with people. But by doing so, I have fun and also want to do it differently than what I hear everywhere (why doing something that plenty of others already do).Ogg Vorbis wrote:Why do you create music? Is it for personal self-expression? If so, what are you trying to express?
Is it to express something both universal as well as personal? If so, what?
Or does your music exist only to express itself?
I always thought music should express something personal but then I realized I have nothing to say.
Also during the process I discover some inner self stuff that have to come out...that I have to "exorcise" in a certain way...I then experiment with new tools and have fun with them...so some more technical and mathematical aspects also come to life...
On top of all that I'm also a true believer that the song have to speak for itself...
So as you can see...all of the above...but I answered number 3 because it's the initial incentive...let's say it's the flame that start the fire...
The answer could also be different if I was talking about work for projects, film and tv...still there is always a true meaning underneath...and that's what people often reffer as "depth" in my music...
Interesting thread BTW

That should also be put in the option in the answers...which is beeing in another world...another planet...another reality...In fact escaping our worldherodotus wrote: I do all this so that I might have the time and skills to make the music that I want to make. Which would also be part of my answer...
Playing God or let God playing through you...That is the question!

I couldn't stop playing anymore than I could stop breathing. I've tried. Actually sold all my stuff a time or two, I can't do it.

I agree, this is a very interesting thread and I feel like I'm learning and thinking.
I am curious about the people who keep saying, "I don't give a f*ck about what anyone else thinks," here are two questions...
1) Should I give a f*ck about what you think about my music?
2) If everyone hated your music except for you, would you change anything about it?
