max 5 is awe-inspiring. I haven't even used it for music yet, I just use jitter for video production and manipulation... I can't wait to see what I can do with it once MSP clicks. all in all, I think it's probably the most well-designed program (of any kind) I've ever had the pleasure of using. the integration of tutorials and help files is really second-to-none.
automap 2.0 is the bee's knees.
all of the sonictwist ensembles for Reaktor are just too awesome. give that guy a cookie.
gross beat. totally cool.
FL8 and Live 7. I spent the whole year learning/working in Live 7, and FL 8 welcomed me back into its arms about two weeks ago. the two go together well.
one more vote for zebra 2.3. also, was surge 1.5 part of this year? both were solid updates for solid synths. synplant was the only new synth that caught my eye (aside from the holy grail that is alchemy, but we'll see if it makes it before 2009).
uhbik is being purchased soon. good stuff. kombinat was a great release. it wasn't quite the paradigm-shift that ohmicide was, but I use both almost equally for different purposes. I'm really hoping bigseq 2 makes it out soon.

i'm surprised Effectrix hasn't been mentioned more. it's not my personal favourite but i like it and i know a lot of other people have been digging it.coops2 wrote:This year has ben a good year for software for me
I like the new Voxengo stuff with the rooting matrix, very impressive. Also recently bought Martin Eastwoods Duet and Sugar Bytes Effectrix
which voxengo plugs have the routing matrix? i bought the new Elephant and i must say it's a very nice limiter. not sure if it can make a best-of list though.
EDIT: well it looks like Elephant has the router in it for starters

Cubase 4.5
(wish that had turned up five years ago)
solid - efficient- a joy to use.
Beat Maker
(how do they get all that in an iTouch?!!)
Like having Ableton in your pocket and the udates keep getting better and better.

I think the interface and usability developments in Volcano 2 put it on the short list. "What you use is what you see" is just a brilliant design philosophy. It allows you to get the fullest potential out of complex software in the shortest amount of time.
If you haven't used it, you really should check out the demo ASAP - it's very fun
