Put this together from something I'd been working on ages ago. Finished it today:

Dubgrade

All feedback is appreciated! :)

Yeah, I second that -- the track is OK, but the bass sound is just not as deep as dub needs.

Post

You pretty much echoed my thoughts. Problem is the bass itself doesn't lend itself to a really deep sound - it's a Jazz Bass with light roundwound strings on it. I'll see what I can do with it.

Thanks for the feedback.

run it thru an octave down pedal/software, etc.
There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres. Pythagoras

Cool track with a happy feel.

I prefer heavier (or maybe more greasy) dub and I'll second the Bass could sound deeper. ( Think bass subharmonics -iod- regenarator could work well)

THis said the overall sound is very clear and clean so that I'm just wondering if a change in the bass would not imply some more changes in the global sound so ....

Edit + Maybe a deeper reverb could be cool also

Only my 0.002 though

if only you had a horn section complete with dub delay

Post

yeah its a nice track m8............IMHO

The kick could certainly be more ferocious, even in a chill dub reggae vibe as this. Is this really 36 seconds long? Sounds like a good start. :)

I agree with comments about the bass. It's not heavy/deep enough. I still like it though

Hey, record it, edit it in and repost it - I'd love to hear what that sounds like.

It originated from B sides of old school reggae 45's and 7inches (which were aptly named dub). Like a broken down version of the full song, usually with lots of echo on pieces of vocal, rim shots and generally a trippy extended mix of the song. Later, DJs would use them and mix other accapella and live vocals overtop of them creating a long 'dance hall' set for a particular sounds (DJ crews). They evolved from this and the use of their style in d&b, jungle and later some ambient into what is named dub nowadays.

robo this is sounding good so far :D. I'd have to agree it needs some sub punch in the kicks and bass (mostly the kick). Also I'd add some high feedback/pitched up or down delay to some of the rimshot. It has an oldschool kind of 80's bleech feel(all nighter) to it now. Like something you'd hear in Repo Man or something! So far so good :tu:!

Robojam I just simply added some sub kick and effects using the excellent and now free Groove Analogizer ..

Dubgrade with Optomadic sub spice

Just a quick thing to show what a difference some sub bass can do for this track! I also noticed the track was really low so to bring out the bass a touch more I limited everything -5db boost 3 and normalized 100%.

I band passed the kick so GA would only detect it and did 2 passes. One for the sub and the other for those random high ones. Everything extra you hear was done with GA!

Let me know if you need any help with GA or adding subs to the bassline (which would be a different process) ;)!
