Out of the 4 who do YOU think takes the cake?

HAPPY NEW YEARs KVR Audio!!!

one fm only

Yamaha DX7s with thousands of presets online. Just as cheap and has a great re sell value i.e what you paid for it :)

But out of those 4 I would say FM8 is awesome, but haven't tried the others. But a hardware DX7 will make you smile and is a great mother keyboard.

2 of those synths are not FM (and technically FM8 is PM, maybe Octopus too)

What about Toxic 2 and Toxic 3? They have loads of great presets, very usable FM synths.

FM 8

Looking forward to this- what IS the state of the art for FM (PM, works out to the same dang thing in real life: PM: cos((angle += incr) + change), FM: cos(angle += (incr + change))).

+1 !

Toxic Biohazard is the latest release with loads more presets and features.

And it's only £70 - can it be beaten??!!

It would be nice to hear some audio examples of these synths by users (and not drowned in FX).

Surge and Circle are not FM synths.

So, between FM8 and Octopus, I would chose FM8.

In response to what others have said, FM8 is not a PM (phase modulation) synth. The Dx7, which it was loosely based on, was technically PM, but FM7 and FM8 are true FM. Also, those who like to point out that the DX7 is 'really' a PM synth are probably just regurgitating what they have read and don't really have a good understanding of what is going on under the hood. Yes, technically it uses PM, but it is silly to call it a PM synth, because it just uses PM as a round about way to digitally generate the EXACT same waveforms that would be achieved through FM, and ALL of the programming is done as FM. Sonically it is an FM synth, and calling it a PM synth is just going to confuse people. Please stop.

Also, to those who suggest buying a DX7 instead of FM8; have you ever tried programming a DX7? That's one synth that I'm grateful to have a mouse and a big screen for making patches, because it was a major PITA to make patches on the DX7 IMO. Also, FM8 is far more powerful than a DX7, Period.
"The Juno 60 was often incorrectly referred to as a synth. It is, in fact, a chorus unit with a synth attached." -PAK

Not true. Someone started a thread specifically for drunk people. :tu: :D
I've got nothing to sell...am I on the right site?

Yeah, but the DX7 sounds so much better to my ears. Here's a comparison: www.scherer.de/Download/DXtest.rar
You can get a TX7 for 50 bucks (or get two for stereo), there are zillions of patches availible online, no need to do any programming. In the end, to me the sound and how I can integrate it in a mix trumps everything else.

Not only that, software editors are available for allowing you to use a big screen and your mouse.
