Hi ... I'm new to the VST scene; my band Karma180 wants to play live synth using a laptop, host and plug-ins. Right now we're using a Dell Latitude with a 2 gig processor and 2 gigs of RAM running WinXP, for a host we're using VST Host 1.45 (a Steinberg freebie) and for sounds we've downloaded a bunch of demo plug-ins like Absynth, Minimogue, etc ... are we doing things right ??? How could we improve our soft synth approach. The synth parts play an important role in our Eno/Floydish sound. Thanks, Karma

Do you have a controller / MIDI keyboard?
Does it have assignable knobs or sliders?
How much time do you have for using the mouse while playing?
Do you want to explore ways of using the computer by itself (without a MIDI controller)?
Do you want to try using multiple synths at once?
Have you used synths before?
What kind were they?
Have you tried out any free or donationware synths?
Here are a few free ones you may want to try:
Oatmeal
Atlantis
Synth1
xhip synth
PolyIblit
Here are some more hosts to consider:
Bidule
AudioMulch
MiniHost
SaviHost
Cantabile
Usine

www.toptensoftware.com/cantabile/

I personally use this, and is most certainly robust in live performance.

1+ for Cantabile. Loads fast and is stable.

But you should be aware that the host imay not be the thing to worry about when playing live--most hosts are stable these days. The problem is having hardware that can keep up. You'll want a fast hard drive, much more ram than you could possibly need, and a fast processor. And more than a little time to test it out for hours and hours, so you're absolutely sure that things won't crash on stage.

+1 for Usine in the way that this soft is really made for Live situation .

i mean not always easy to work on a laptop on stage ,but with Usine you can built your own interface and see for example only
a big knob for the cutoff of the vsti 1 ,
a big fader for the volume of this audio in ,
2 more big knobs for the effect and so...

just my 2 cents..
