Hi,
Can anyone suggest a good freeware distortion for Snare drum? Thanks
Pointless sounding good on it's own. Stick it in, find it's spot and leave it alone.

Check out Ohmicide (I have this) or Kombinat (I don't have this). Since a snare has a very complex frequency structure, applying distortion is going to require a lot of filtering to get a desirable sound. You might even need something that has an envelope follower for the filter (or risk losing the snap and punch of the snare). Some filter models in Volcano2 can be overdriven really nicely.

Ok thanks Justin. I have Volcano but havn't used it much yet. will try that first :)

For a snare, I'd go with a really warm tube sound.

But, you can totally try this: http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=3

SSLs LMC-1 is worth trying ...

Go here, http://www.solid-state-logic.com/productregistration/ ... register, login, go to products/music/free plugins and download the LMC-1 .....

Alternatively, you could click on my sig, go to the vst fx folder and try out Choobigrip .... its free!

Good luck!

Really depends on what kind of sound you're looking for  I often like to layering a very tight snappy noisy bitcrushed sound with something a bit more open and verby, and tweak the EQs to get a nice blend.

I second Ohmicide and Kombinat suggestions in general, but the OP did say freeware.

TAL TUBE and TAL bitcrusher thingy for freeware

depends on what kind of sound you want really. i usually put little bit of a saturator on it and lots of shitty reverb,

I use Silverspike's Ruby Tube on snare to give it that extra bit of character. Works great.

Yes sorry I should have given a bit more info. I'M recording my own Pearl custom wooden snare. I don't have the facilities to mic the whole kit and one under the snare so I lack a little "Fizz". Thanks for your answers all of you.
