Got it, love it. Some say it's the best software limiter on the market.
Most say not ;)
The Precision Limiter is a very transparent limiter but not very usable for high achievable loudness. For transparent limiting and loudness the other listed like Elephant3, Sonnox, Flux, PSP Xenon are the more versatile limiters.

thanx!
Have you tried George Yohng's W1 Limiter VST? "W1 Limiter is a clone of Waves L1, with identical output." It's awesome, and it's free.

(There's also a Universal Audio Unit for Mac peeps.)

Is there any consensus about the cheap JB Barricade Pro ?
It is only 10$, and to my ears it likes to be pushed, and i dig the M/S and correlation features too.
It doesn't sound as loud as Elephant, afaik, but it can be worth considering.

It's a good one. For the stuff I tested it on TLs maximizer, my long time favourite, could do all that Barricade Pro was able to do and was easier to operate (sound is quite close). So I didn't saw the need for it.

The W1 starts to pump at about 5-6dB gain boost already. So this one is definitely not transparent at all. Still for free with a "similar" sound as the Waves L1, it's definitely worth a shot.

InspectorXL (even InspectorFree) is indeed good for shooting out which Limiters do overshots and which not. In case of the three I use regulary:
- TbT TLs Maximizer => even with a boost of 12dB, no overshots at -0.3dB
- W1 Limiter => no clipping/overshots up until 6dB boost (didn't go higher)
- Kjaerhus MPL-1 Pro => no clipping/overshots, though it starts to distort the sound with values greater 5-6dB (boost), else it's transparent as water (unless you use auto gain, cause then the signal is driven back to 0dB rather than -0,3dB that you can setup with the gain knob!)

I don't know about the best, but I like George's W1 too, albeit I use the betabugs version -> http://www.betabugsaudio.com/plugs.php however, I really am an epic fail as an engineer type, so I am probably wrong to recommend this.

Haven't seen Nomad Factory's name mentioned around here for some time so how about their limiters?
Analog Mastering Tools: http://nomadfactory.com/products/amt/index.html
BW2S & LM2S: http://nomadfactory.com/products/bluetu ... index.html
LM662: http://nomadfactory.com/products/asp/index.html
No idea if they're any good but they sure are pretty ...

The LM662 is built after the Fairchild 670 compressor/limiter. I wouldn't call that one transparent at all.

Same goes for the tube series. Those limiters/comps are made for character and are suited for mixing, but I wouldn't use them for mastering.

+1. but very good on the drum bus.
It's not what you use, it's how you use it...

I don't anything out there can beat Voxengo Elephant for transparent limiting. Its the best.

Depends on what your intent is: Getting the highest perceived loudness? The lowest risk of distortion? The highest transparency? The greatest flexibility? Pushing it to the the fore/in your face sound? Preserving the soundscape? The most desirable coloration?

Voxengo Elephant 3 is one of the most flexible ones out and can get really loud.
PSP Xenon has gotten a great deal of love from mastering engineers.
Izotope Ozone is my primary artist's favorite limiter.
Precision Limiter is one of the most transparent I've encountered, but can't get very loud.
Stillwell Event Horizon can create great perceived loudness at minimal cost, but has to be monitored carefully for distortion.

I haven't used the Sonnox or Sonalksis limiters, but the Flux one offered nothing new to me in the middle of my limiter explorations.

Also, keep on eye on DSM by Pro Audio DSP as it remains an unknown but related quantity.
