There is a distorsion in the "Tone palette" here also :

It is a multi effect including a "strong" distorsion. I don't know if you will like it for your snare drum What are you looking for?

Pleasurehead, would it not be a good idea to sample the sound from the bottom of the snare and somehow use the snare drum track to trigger the sample? .... so it gets added to the snare in the mix? I dont know what daw you use, and therefore cant guess what device might do the trick, but I believe the end result would surely be closer to what you are setting out to achieve than using distortion or any other effect.
I'm thinking a vocoder might do the job!
Also, when you have a good sample, and this technique works out, then you wont need to worry about miking up the snare from underneath on future recordings .... also, with this technique, you wont have to filter out any background noise from the 'under the snare' track, and snare vibration when other parts of the kit are being struck.
Furthermore, when you have it playing along with the snare's top, you can process them seperately as you would if you had the capacity to record both top and bottom to seperate tracks.

There is a more organic way to achieve the same effect: after recording, mount the snare drum in front of (or lay it down on top of) one of your monitors, or a small PA speaker. Then mic the bottom head of the snare, and play the top snare mic track back at the top head while recording the results. Mix in to taste. Its kind of like "re-amping", but for a snare drum: it works suprisingly well!tattiemannie wrote:Pleasurehead, would it not be a good idea to sample the sound from the bottom of the snare and somehow use the snare drum track to trigger the sample? ....

Yeah, that would work, However, this thread gave me a right bee-in-the-bonnet! .... and so in response, I have just designed an audio triggered sample player which might be of interest!
I'll post it up soon, certainly in the next few hours .... need to go do other stuff right now.
Look out for 'Tweedle Dee' .... I'll post in in the effects thread. I've been playing around with it for too long today .... very pleased with it indeed!!

My favourite for drums is probably frOhmage, there's a nice crunchy distortion, and automating the filter's cutoff in my host can create some really dirty sounds. Sometimes reminds me of the drums in Boards of Canada's song "Hi Scores".

Ok, here it is ..... Tweedle Dee!
I think this is going to be a very handy piece of kit! ... though I say so myself!

Just a wee 'thanks' to Pleasurehead for the inspiration
.... I now have an updated version of Tweedle Dee for free download.
'Tweedle Duo' can trigger two samples in sync with an incoming signal. So, record your snare, run it through 'Tweedle Duo', and you can add that bottom skin sample .... and another sample ( a bit of whoosh? ), pitch change them, and pitch mod them .... used gently on short samples, the pitch mod can add a bit of variation which will make things interesting without 'upstaging'.
