I had no idea that exsisted

I thought about that possibility as I posted, remembering that my friend who works both behind the console (though mostly with PT HD), behind the drum kit, and also knows the consumer and "prosumer" markets didn't know about this either for some reason. I had dismissed it as a fluke - guess not!

Simply because they don't. At least not at any rate that would seem sensible.
Oh well, yes, they *do* update one of their sequencers. Garageband that is. Great.

SX3 is working pretty much crashfree on my Windows laptop.

It was voluntarily changed after requested by well known company.

What i like about Cubase, not directed to you, ttoz, is that i never, ever felt host envy...

didnt' Logic 8 come out in September 2007, 7 came out in 2004.

and according to wikipedia, cubase4 was in 2006, 4.1 in 2007 and 4.5 in 2008....

in other words both had three years between their last cycle and their current one...
and bear in mind I use Nuendo and Cubase as my only two DAW's (well I still have studio vision pro)

The crash thing for cubase is a pretty much a myth. I've had it on three different machines without BSOD stuff happening. Some crashes with 4.1, but ironed out in 4.12/4.13.

Now, logic 7.2.3? between the core audio errors and crashes I never got anything done

Hard to believe I'm still using 4 year old version, but I do rather love SX3 to bits.

Oh, yeah, there were problems on osx, that's why I'm using xp (and runs very very fast!)

But unlike with Cubase, there's been no significant maintainance bugfixes. In fact, 8.02 is running worse for a lot of people than 8.01 was. Besides, it took Apple 3 years to come up with a version that barely offers any technical improvements. Cosmetic changes, yes, all over the place. Truly new features, barely, if at all.

Seriously, I do believe that a company such as Steinberg has to take care of their sequencer development. Something very positive in my book. Apple simply doesn't have to, not at all. And they don't.

and some people at least on nuendo are running 4.1.3 rather than 4.2.2.....and even more of us are disgusted with the maintenance rate at steinberg. But I digress .
I too am happy to see a new version of my DAW of choice.

Well, the combo of my aging AMD 4400+ X2, Asus A8V mobo and Cubase SX3 is so damn tight and stable I just never felt the need to get into Cubase 4 that badly.

The only time I've ever been able to crash SX3 was testing beta's of synths. Stability is very important to me.

I was tempted by the drag n drop effects ability (the one thing that annoys me that I can't do in SX3), but reading the cubase.net forums kept putting me off upgrading to ver 4.

In particular the big deal breaker about the automation, limiting actual points to integer values of 0-100, also the stupid bug that can cause copying blocks to shift position, depending on how much your zoomed into the arrangement. Talk about bizarre!. I don't even think Steinberg has ever responded on the automation, never seen a direct response on that issue from the mods on the cubase.net forum anyway.

So I really REALLY hope they return automation points to actual high-res values of SX3.

Granted also the 5.0 release is bound to be buggy, so I'll wait for the first couple of updates to come along before making a final decision

Quick question to those that jumped to ver 4 from SX3, did you have to change to a new steinberb dongle or was the same one used?.

I've got some Eiosis and Rob Papen synth licenses on my SX3 dongle and I'm wondering if I'd have to switch those over to a new dongle for cubase 5.

not sure how helpful this answer is.
I have cubase 4 on my macbook pro but it was my first cubase so it came with its own dongle.
on my pc I have been running Nuendo since 2 and have been using the same dongle for 2, 3 and 4..........

(I also have Nuendo 1 but I used that on the mac and that is more an ilok dongle, but I digress again )
