absolutely. digi just won't add it. i could NOT live without pdc. and i must admit, that's the one thing that cubase blows everything else away it. it's delay comp is perfect.

There's also been talk of a new VST3 SDK tool to kickstart VST3 development. Some tool that, when you write for VST3, allows you to spit out a 2.4 version of the same plug.

That might help.

If this is the case, maybe the peeps will finally adapt VST3 - but... does that mean that this is the ultimate "death note" for the VST2 technology? You can do crossover plugins for a while, but in 2 years, I'm sure Steinberg will drop VST2 if all other hosts followed v3 technology.

This means:
99,9% of the now available plugins will be USELESS!
Freeware, commercial, donationware - anything. In short... you can totally foget to use what you have at the moment, no matter how good it might be.

Don't believe me? Then think about what Steinberg did with the DX technology and Cubase 4.

with respect that is not a valid analogy.
DX technology as far as I know:
1) was never steinberg's technology.
2) was dropped by microsoft whose technology I think it was.
3) So steinberg didnt' drop DX, it just stopped supporting DX from within its DAW.....

in other words steinbergs dropping of DX from within Cubase/Nuendo in no way affects what dx plugin creators and other DAWS do with dx, except from maybe making them see the 'light'.

Can you still be too sure, that Steinberg "won't" drop VST2 in 2 years, now that there seems to be a simpler SDK?

Speaking of which, Cubase 5 (incl. Studio) showed up on MusiciansFriend. Prices like usual (with a 100bucks discount) and a possible release date: 31st January.

Does that mean, if I get C4 NOW, I get a Grace Period and C5 for free? Suddenly all boards and contacts for Steinberg closed down and I'm "not allowed to ask until I'm registered"... once again even though I already am... at least 3 times before the yet-another-db-crash.

For my part, I am pretty sure. As long as the intalled base of VST2 plugs is there, Steinberg won't alienate developers or customers. Just a simple thought: If 75% of your plus won't work with a new host, you won't use a new host.

Just called Steinberg Support Germany, and I KNOW why the board is down:

- Steinberg closes the boards till 19:00 GMT+1 to insert a Cubase 5 subsection
- Additional to that, there will be one FAQ in this section regarding "Grace Periods"
- there will be NO Wavelab 7 before end of 2009 (according to the phone support)

Grace Period:
Is in place since December 2008 and lasts till the official release of Cubase 5 (hinted by MusiciansFriend at end of January, the Phone Support kinda confirmed that already, too). A fee is due and will be only about 20-25bucks (Euro) for getting Cubase 5 from Cubase 4.

Everything "official" will be relesed in 3 hours. But this is what I could find out.

Looks like I need to shell out 160bucks the next days, cause I'm DEFINITELY NOT paying 200-250bucks from SX3 to C5. Save money where you can. And who knows what they dropped in C5 from C4.

Oh and I never said anything what advaya is accusing me to do. I do hate the fact of Steinberg being bitches in terms of answering support questions, but I'm a loyal user since 1994. And I also never encountered mentioned bugs either. Even with non .x versions.

Well you have to admit that some facts are already "known". It's the small details again. Then again, I was surprised that the Steinberg Support (Phone) was so open to my questions. They usually NEVER do that.

Personally I'm satisfied. If they enhanced bouncing, went back to values for automation AND feature the HALion One player with the Motif Sounds, not to mention still feature the "drag'n drop" for FX, I'm all game.

159Euro for updating from SX3 to C4, plus 25bucks for the grace period (though some people might say, that's a ripoff) => 184Euro instead of 199-249Euro upgrade.

BUT... things will be finally set in less than 3 hours for that matter.
