XT2.5 Linux and wineasio

I'm using wineasio 0.7.4 converted from here, converted with alien, on Ubuntu 8.10. XT2.5 works under Wine for me without problem using this. It seems as stable as it does under Windows XP for me. I'll give it more of a run down as soon as I can find a good project to put it through its paces.

Fiddling...? could you be a little more specificbillstei wrote:My initial attempt did crash wineasio and the XT cursor stopped moving, but after fiddling with Jack (via qjackctl) and the ALSA mixer (I am not using PulseAudio anywhere) I am now able to record, playback, and export without crashing.

Fiddling is a highly technical term, and requires years and years of experience and practice. Those of us who have poor memories but continue fiddling without keeping a Fiddle Journal live in a constant state of fear and dread, aka fiddleforgetophobia. The fiddling then becomes an abstract conceptual journey of re-inventing round objects that make movement easier -- I forget what they're called. There are at least two things that I notice that are different now compared to what existed only hours ago. One is that the Interface in Jack was set to hw:1 (I have two sound "cards" in this computer) but now it is set to hw:1,0 and perhaps a zero is something even though a zero is nothing. The other thing is that in the ALSA mixer, under Switches there is a checkbox checked by "Line-In Capture" that was not checked before, and even though I would think that Jack has nothing to do with ALSA, the Setup screen of qjackctl has "Driver" set to ALSA, and so I am obviously wrong. And being wrong does not surprise me, it happened one other time back in 1969, this much I do remember. Or it may have been 1979.sandsound wrote:Fiddling...? could you be a little more specificbillstei wrote:My initial attempt did crash wineasio and the XT cursor stopped moving, but after fiddling with Jack (via qjackctl) and the ALSA mixer (I am not using PulseAudio anywhere) I am now able to record, playback, and export without crashing.

This fiddling-concept sounds intriguing, my own approach is more like "trial and error", thou mostly error I must admitbillstei wrote:Fiddling is a highly technical term, and requires years and years of experience and practice. I did however read an interesting post on the Ubuntuforum called "WINE PACKAGES FOR 1.1.12 on Intrepid and Hardy may be broken." ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1032317 ).
What wine-version do you use ?

Apparently Wine 1.1.12 has a lot of broken stuff, and I think this is (partly) because of the 64 bit Wine efforts/code being brought in. I usually am testing Wine daily through git, which for the moment is the same as 1.1.13, and it seems to be more well behaved than 1.1.12. At some point between 1.1.12 and 1.1.13 Wine would not even recognize ALSA as a valid audio driver, but I am seeing it okay in winecfg now with 1.1.13.sandsound wrote:

IMO there will be (many) more breakages over the next weeks/months because the commits to bring about 64 bit Wine are big and radical. Also there are rumblings about a DIB engine ( http://www.winehq.org/wwn/355#Real%20DIB%20Progress ). But whada I know, I'm just a git junkie.

sandsound,
I also have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496. I found on a page that there is an issue with the Pulse audio driver that conflicts with the 2496 so you should remove that. Also, in case you already haven't you should install alsa-tools-gui package which gives you the "Envy24 control". This allows you to control all the settings on your 2496 since the Envy24 uses the same chip.
In summary:
$ sudo apt-get install alsa-tools-gui
-and-
$ sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio

I would recommend a purge in order to avoid a nasty Gnome session startup problem (dare I say, bug?), like this:LBN wrote:sandsound,

which I documented in my Fiddle Journal under comment #4, here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=969382
I have been audio sober and off the Pulseaudio now for 2 months and 3 days, and life is good. Going to AA (ALSA Always) meetings keeps me on the right path.

Amen to thatbillstei wrote:I have been audio sober and off the Pulseaudio now for 2 months and 3 days, and life is good. Going to AA (ALSA Always) meetings keeps me on the right path.
Did a fresh install of 8.04.1 64bit last night (been using 32bit because of java/flash), and like always I erased any trace of Pulse, still no luck getting it to work in wine. Native it purrs like a kitten, so if only there was a simple way to use my win-vsti under linux, id be fine with that.

By win-vsti do you mean EnergyXT2-as-VST or some other VST?sandsound wrote:Native it purrs like a kitten, so if only there was a simple way to use my win-vsti under linux, id be fine with that.

I miss my XLN Addictive Drums, my Moog vsti synth and other win-vsti whenever I use the native linux version.billstei wrote:By win-vsti do you mean EnergyXT2-as-VST or some other VST?
I know that I can load them with dssi-vst, but it's not as fluid to work with.

Only in UbuntuStudio 7.04, but since its no longer supported i have moved on to 8.04._starcraft_ wrote:has anyone got it to record succesfully in wineasio?
I make a mixdown of the tracks and open that wav in native XT2, then I record all the audio and use it in Wine XT2.
It's not perfect, but at least I can make music
