I'm glad they aren't too much techy rant and that you're getting something useful from them. Dsp is one of those subjects where the rabbit hole just keeps on going. There is always something more than you initial think to take into account. I want to start writing some papers on analog modeling /dsp in general, one of the first ones will be a paper on a non-linear digital model of an analog state variable filter that I'll put together with Antti Huovilainen. Even just a general tech doc entitled something like "WTF Is Going On To My Audio: Common Misconceptions And Useful Tips For The Digital Audio Music Production", which covers things like oversampling / sample rate conversion, dithering, limiting, what happens in an adc and dac, what happens in a cd player and mp3 / aac encoding and decoding, the benefits/drawbacks of digital/analog etc.
Arksun wrote:I listened to a couple of the audio examples and after adjusting volume for the treated versions (they were louder and wanted to compare at the same percieved volume level so I didn't fall for the louder=better trap) they do seem to glue the sounds well, though its not a particular sound I'm personally fond of.

But then I've never been a fan of the SSL buss compressor either, so its just a taste thing.

Good luck with your plug when it comes out, I'm sure it will do well :)
Thanks for the good wishes. I've tried to push the compressor pretty hard in the examples to show that it can be abused and still sound good, which most people don't expect from a plugin. As long as you think it sounds like the original I'm happy, even if you don't like that sound :) I will be doing more plugins in the future if this one doesn't flop completely, so hopefully one of them will be of more interest. For the record what are you favourite analog compressor?

If you want to fill and obvious hole in the compressor market and make money hand over fist: be the first to get an Empirical Labs EL8X Distressor with the "British Mode mod" to market. An accurate Distressor model would probably allow you to retire a young man.

Aside from the Distressor which is at the very top of my wishlist items, here are analog comps I'd like to see:

1. 1176LN
2. LA2A
3. Manley Vari-Mu
4. Neve 33609
5. Fairchild

maybe it is a good idea to make sort of modular comp, apparently many people like 1176 for its transformers and LA2A for a tube stage, so maybe having GR unit with switchable opto/VCA options and input/output stage would be interesting. E.g. trying 1176 VCAs with LA2A tubes...

i want it, feel free to sell it to me now :D

What would be interesting Andy (if that's your name) is if you stuck up audio files using the same settings and compare other compressors to yours :)

Bit of a blind test like what focusrite have done on their site with their new plug-in bundle.

Andy your not making this a dongle protection thingy are you? highly annoying when you see that all other companies require you to have a dongle key. However iLock may be an option for you.

Andy stated earlier that it would be simple serial number based copy protection.

Andy I understand you did a 1176 model for BFD2 also - so I wonder if that will get modelled? I have a feeling Waves are working on one and Softube have just released one - but of course both overpriced IMO and not suffcient to detract me from my UAD1176 - but if a Cytomic modelled one came out that was reasonably priced I would think it would also be a winner....

Andy I didnt quite get the comments overleaf - did you mean that there is no oversampling in the Glue?

sick idea - a bit like the approach with Synthsquad...

I don't have a favourite as I don't use any :)
But I have been fortunate enough to have been in studios that do, it's the one area plugins still have a lot to learn, but I have high hopes for Nebula to pull it off, once the next-gen engine gets released and it can sample compressors better.

But like others have said, Fairlight, Avalon, Manley, UA stuff etc, all have their different characters.

The main problem still I find with most plugin compressors is thinning out the sound when compressing stereo signals. I think we all crave the larger than life ability that some analogue compressors manage to pull off. Harmonic Distortion plays its part in that I'm sure.

If you do post up any new sound clips Andy, can you please make sure the volume balance between untreated and treated is perceptually equal, to make comparisons more fair, thanks!.

Btw, was the GUI for this compressor inspired by the SSL bus comp, its quite the similar looking setup.

If you ever plan on modeling another compressor, please consider this. That thing is awesome and has that "analogue" magic in spades.

For a challenge in fast but clean attack/release behavior then I suggest getting hold of this.

Cheers!
