I'm glad they aren't too much techy rant and that you're getting something useful from them. Dsp is one of those subjects where the rabbit hole just keeps on going. There is always something more than you initial think to take into account. I want to start writing some papers on analog modeling /dsp in general, one of the first ones will be a paper on a non-linear digital model of an analog state variable filter that I'll put together with Antti Huovilainen. Even just a general tech doc entitled something like "WTF Is Going On To My Audio: Common Misconceptions And Useful Tips For The Digital Audio Music Production", which covers things like oversampling / sample rate conversion, dithering, limiting, what happens in an adc and dac, what happens in a cd player and mp3 / aac encoding and decoding, the benefits/drawbacks of digital/analog etc.Arksun wrote:Great posts Andy, nice to see the thought that goes into something like this.
Thanks for the good wishes. I've tried to push the compressor pretty hard in the examples to show that it can be abused and still sound good, which most people don't expect from a plugin. As long as you think it sounds like the original I'm happy, even if you don't like that soundArksun wrote:I listened to a couple of the audio examples and after adjusting volume for the treated versions (they were louder and wanted to compare at the same percieved volume level so I didn't fall for the louder=better trap) they do seem to glue the sounds well, though its not a particular sound I'm personally fond of.
But then I've never been a fan of the SSL buss compressor either, so its just a taste thing.
Good luck with your plug when it comes out, I'm sure it will do well
