Tempo and timesig implementation question for users?

Hi,

I need to decide how to implement tempo and time changes in xt. xt1 had separate tracks for this, but personally to like to add tempo and timesig properties to the upcoming global markers (see screenshot).

Any opinion on how complex/easy to sould be?

Either way, its no big job as we have most of the code ready.

Firstly... YAY!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest, I thought the XT1 method was pretty good, actually. One thing I'd miss from XT1 though is the possibility of a freeform envelope to control Tempo, but obviously that requires a specialised track.

imho, Tracktion was one of those sequencers that did Timesig/Tempo well. It's similar to your idea of markers which contain Timesig/Tempo data. However, it was also possible to 'morph' between tempos.

i have no idea on how it should be implemented,

as long as you can ramp to different tempo setting & the gui will display the tempo & time sig with the bar lines being closer or further apart & showing time sig gaps its all good

Tempo and timesig as part of global markers sounds ok but how easy would it be to create a gradual Rall. or Acell? It is pretty easy with seperate tracks.

Can the Numerator please go up to 24 (or more) as I like writing things in 19/8 23/8 etc and can't be alone in that surely?

Can sequences of markers be duplicated like sequences of track parts? If you have a part that consists of e.g 32 succesions of 4/4 - 2/4 - 4/4 you'd want to just duplicate the timesig info, for example. That and as long as the curvy envelopes to bpm are still in there (see above post), I'd vote for the markers instead of a track, for cleanliness of layout and always accessible without scrolling.

I like the idea of having it in the golbal markers, as long as it can do ramped (& graphical?) tempo changes. Makes it very easy to see what's going on when separated out from MIDI & Audio tracks like this

I see no problem with the global markers approach; after all, it's not often necessary to change it per track. I also echo others in that it would be great to still be able to have an envelope-controlled tempo change.

ramping one tempo to the next would not be a problem at all. I could just have a setting per marker. Accelerando is that what its called?

Given the choice i would have it very simple on the marker set up but also have a switch
Flick the switch and the marker area then becomes a track of sorts that can be used for doing envelope based tempo time sig changes
Once you have edited flick the switch and be back in overview mode which doubles as the marker area

Accelerando = speed up

Rallentando = slow down

A setting per marker that does it would be cool!

I think the marker idea makes the most sense, as it's a global change, not an object of the project in the way that parts are.

Keeping the tempo automatable by envelope is a must in my opinion, very cool feature in XT1.

So long as there is the ablity to shape the tempo change and it isn't simply a linear ramp. At least there should be curve choices for exponential etc, but the abilty to just draw it in as an envelope would cover all needs!

NAS's idea of a switch to toggle between an envelope view and the marker view would be good for this

maybe the markers could be like a "special" track that is always on top (above the ruler, as pictured), and works kind of like a combination of xt1 marker and tempo tracks. markers can be dragged and copied. tempo & time sig would be embedded in each marker, and the marker lane could be expanded for inline editing to access tempo envelopes.

i think a tempo track like in xt1 where i can draw a tempoline would be much better. xt1 was perfect belonging this, very clear, and cubase 5 did exactly the same now.
