The GUI is nicer - last time I played with the Twin demo, it was all vomit coloured. TBH, it was one of the worst (not the worst though) GUIs I used. Thought it was nasty. So this is indeed an improvement.

I'd like to know what improvements have been made though. The filter still sounds the same - the guy in the video was going on about the lovely filters - it was the exactly the filters that didn't do it for me at the time. There was loads of hooha about how they sounded like Korg MS filters - personally i thought they were miles away from that type sound - very digital and predictable. He had a quick play around with a filter at maximum res. Maximum res and it just buzzed a little bit - no in fact it didn't even buzz...it wasn't that dirty - not exciting for me I'm afraid. I really did like Twin for all the modulation possibilities it gave, and it really did seem like it would be a great bread and butter synth. But has it turned into a croissant yet? bread and butter synths are everywhere - I want a few fairy cakes and chilli-glazed baguettes, not another supermarket sliced white bread in a plastic bag...

I'll give it a listen when it's out. Gotta give it at least a chance. But I have to say - impOSCar2 and FXPansion DCam are coming out soon - and it seems those DCam things are tipped to be $300 or under. Not sure where something like Twin can fit in there...

To me, it seem like Twin is more of a direct competitor to things like Albino and that Linplug thingummy...Alpha? In that case - where's the point of difference? I like synths, I especially still like the old analogues that have character. I also like unusual and character digitals, such as Wavestations and fantastical samplers such as ShortCircuit. I buy both. But somehow Twin fell between the cracks. It doesn't compete with analogue character, and it doesn't sem to have digital character. Is that what users use it for - the bread and butter stuff? I just can't see where I'd use it. If I want big lush pads, I'll use impOSCar or layer up bsome Wavestation sounds. If I want spikey basses and leads, I'll use impOSCar or my old 202 or MS20. If I want just weird sounds I'll fire up a sampler and mangle something beyond recognition. If I want just plain old middle-of-the-road sounds I'll use FreeAlpha, a Juno or two etc. Where would Twin fit in?

(me hopes there is a nice upgrade path/price for us twin users :D )
Upgrading from Volcano to Volcano 2 was pretty painless, so I figure this one won't break the bank too badly either. Man, all I can think about is how much I'd like to see Timeless get this kind of update... perhaps with a more modular approach to feedback routing and a slightly deeper implementation of the "stretch" mode (a pitch and grain size control would be nice).

It still doesn't have the regular fX (from what I could see)... as in, I didn't see reverb, chorus (although you can do this with delay), and other FX typically found.

I'm hoping there's a nice upgrade path too

My thoughts exactly!!!

I'm 90% positive they're going to update Timeless like that. Can you think of how nice a delay like that would be? I've been drooling over the idea ever since Volcano 2 came out!

without a doubt: the same treatment to Timeless? just the ideas of what they could do (ie- 3am's suggestions of granulary and feedbacky modularity) makes me all tingly
(definitely OT, but have to add: was *just* fooling around with the new delay stuff that was added to OS3 for the Virus TI. Insanely cooooool stuff...which is why it put me in the mind of the twin 2 treatment being slapped on Timeless! 8) )

and to the person who said make an FX version... I believe it's called Volcano ;)
I know but i can hope for a free fx version can't i?
Sure you can hope: but I'm guessing a fair discount on Volcano 2 is more likely. :)
Damn those software devs and their reasonably priced cross grades! :x

Well.. as the cat is out of the bag, I guess it's ok to post this little teaser.

FabFilter Twin 2 recreating an acoustic piano (reverb is courtesy of Bootsie, epicverb FTW!)

.. sure, it ain't that realistic but remember, this a 3 oscillator, dual filter synth (well, it has two more at the delay that could basically be used as monophonic filters as well). Try doing this with any other "simple" VA.

Cheers!

VERY impressive from a VA!

Any form of cross-modulation (ringmod, am, fm, filtermod by osc)?

Not in that piano preset there ain't but Twin 2 can now do ring modulation between Osc 1 and Osc 2. :)

The piano was fairly complex and started off as little sound design competition among the sound designers. I wasted nearly 50 hours on that thing. I hope I won.. they promised a fabfilter goodie bag so of course I did my best damn it! :hihi:

That's really nice. Good patch programming.

Bro, that is really sweet, especially considering what Twin currently is capable of doing...

Only two more days. :-o I'm such a fanboy, its pathetic.

Woohoo! If they've added ring mod, then for me personally that's much bigger news than changes to the interface or onboard FX.

Re: your piano patch, that's mighty impressive programming. Like, W Carlos-level impressive.
