ok question. still getting crackling sometimes in live with asio4all.. do you simply have to disable all the other software or something? what settings do you have it set to? anything special i need to do?

You'll most likely need to set your latency at its highest setting...

well i just loaded her at 1024 i guess thats where shes gonna stay. it is weird sometimes it crackles sometimes it doesnt. maybe i need to update drivers?? so bizzaarreeerere

Hi, hope this is not out of place.

I've read that crackles can be caused by the wifi so turn it off when doing audio.

Had an asus and was going to buy the 904 with the hd but after comparing it with an Advent 4211 the Advent won. The screen on the advent/msi-wind 4211 is 10" @ 1024x600 which make browsing easier and the kbd is also larger and easier to use. The drawback is battery capacity on a 3 cell, lucky to get 2 1/2 hours.
The atom N270 shows up as a dual core but it not although it has 2 threads

IMHO The build quality of asus is better tho!

Just to say that with asio4all 2.9 beta set at 1280 samples the demo song in reaper runs fine. 61% cpu and with the 12 fx on the fx cpu is at 33% and so far no crackles. Writing this at the same time seems to have no adverse affect. Strange tho, even when not playing the song 45% cpu and fx cpu is 29%

Regarding the crackling... I have an acer aspire one and get consistent crackles when the wifi isn't disabled and none at all when it is so... it's an old thing to deal with but just right click the icon and disable it.

mine is a eeepc 901.
runs asio4all with no crackling at 512 buffer when usin a few vstis. and vsts.
it will crackle a bit if u start putting the cpu under pressure.(cos of spikes)
at 1024 u will be able to load a few more vstis...and u will have no cracklin untill the cpu is truly maxed out.

so i would say @1024 perfectly stable asio4all
@512 only if u dont push the cpu too much

if u updated the bios to the latest one that was on asus site (not the one from the upgrade utility)
and if u updated chipset and audio driver, always from asus site . u did all that was needed.
thats all i did

i did it in october....and havent updated anything since...so dunno if new bios or drivers have come out....what aint broken i dont fix

k very cool input. i just hooked in my pcr 50 into this little baby and ... wow so cool. i am considering perhaps getting a nano key and a nano drumpad haha that would be so cool and take it live or even a coffee shop with headphones for fun + learning

I have been looking for a netbook user thread to exchange info and experiences and could only find this one as an ongoing thread, so I'll post here if you Asus users do not mind (if you do I'll delete it again)
It seems like there are some prejudices about netbooks a la "those processors are pure sh*t and won't do for anything than surfing or checking mails in the airport". Well, I have reason to believe this is as wrong as can be.

For demonstration I will report a performance.

My netbook is a Medion Akoya 1210, with intel Atom N270 1,6 Ghz. 1 Gb RAM (that is actually an OEM version of the MSI Wind)

Now using Orion as DAW and only the onboard generators and effects, I had a rock steady performance with:

1 Audio tracks with vocals
5 synths - (2 x Wasp), Wavefusion, Monobass and Toxic 2.5 (with it's internal sequencer in action)
1 sampler (a bass sound)
1 Ultran Sample synth (a wave sequence)
1 Drumrack (4 samples in action)
1 XR-909 (a 909 kick drum)
1 TomCat (an off-beat Tom)

All in all 10 gens + 1 audio track

As send effects:
1 Impulse Response Reverb
1 Ultraverb
1 Cross delay

In the mixer section:
8 active mixer EQs with panning
1 Analog Distortion unit on the XR909 BassDrum

At the master bus:
1 Low Cut filter
1 AutoGain limiter
1 Analog clipper
1 Limiter

All in all 16 effect units
The production was a 8 bar loop.

This is actually far beyond what I would usually have in action before freezing or bouncing tracks even on my 1,8 dual core.

Off course this performance does come at some cost.

First and foremost you will have to tweak Windows XP to optimal performance on music. Try these:

That means dropping every other function and win-services beyond performance and maybe mail checking. No anti-virus nor security and networks services should be active.

Secondly: Depending on your systems performance, making music with this performance might solely be for programming music, not recording it with low latency. In that case you should record elsewere and import your waves. Experiment with your drivers to get the right settings no matter at what latency.

Thirdly: I can run Sonar as well but not as efficient, but for both Sonar and Orion, you will have to activate their multiprocesser engines. Why when Intel Atom is single-core? Because it has HTT

and can take advantage of parallel processing to some extent. When running Sonar the result is very dramatic with regard to differences in performance. In Orion it's only when you push it.

I guess a lot of people could do with much less than the above mentioned before bouncing or converting to audio tracks. So there you are. Netbooks have a bright future in music production I'd say.
