The origin of Aldebaran Polka!!!







Electronic Malfunction

The second tune I ever posted here at KVR; it sank like a rock when I first posted it in the winter of 2002
Untouched from the original archive; you'll note the wonderful noise and clipping on the bassline, for example
Also notice the track tags- ebw (my middle name's Blaine), and a tag of cult- both oldskool ew.

Anyways- I found my track notes:

Drums- ReDrum
Bass- Oberheim Matrix-6
Vocals- the Props had given us registered Reason users a small account at what now is M13. I got a whole bunch of vocal samples.
"Guitar"- Pro-52 through Ohm Force's Predatohm for the first solo. The same thing reversed and run through Hematohm for the second one.
Various noises- Reaktor and Absynth
Other effects- Spektral Delay and OhmBoys

It's not pretty, but it was the beginning of what fans worldwide ( ) call Aldebaran Polka- and it might be the most commercial thing I've ever done.

The stuff you are doing with Pro 52 and Predatohm is mind bending! Aside from the noisy artifacts, everything sounds pretty good. Thanks.

Noisy it is- the main reason I started going to completely ITB producing.

It's funny- it's like a lot of normal guitar tracks in that if I played you the Pro-52 track on its own, it doesn't sound that good. However, with everything else going on, it makes a monster of a "guitar" sound

I saw it as a logical extension of the "Minneapolis sound" of the late '70s and early '80s; that cross between disco, funk and rock that started with Lipps, Inc and went through Prince and the Revolution. Of course, some people might think I'm crazy because of the previous statement .

While I'm not a big fan of either (even though I've seen some amazing Prince sets). it's hard to be in the music scene here from back in that era and not have some of it rub off on you.

John (herodotus) and Mike (mikebeck) are two of the few people I know from around here who managed to pretty much disregard the "Minneapolis sound" completely- and in John's case, it's probably because he opened shows so often for the other really huge thing going on in the Cities back then which became the "Minneapolis sound" of the late '80s- The Replacements. As for Mike- he's always been Mike (and that's a good thing )

Wow didn't get Lipps Inc or Price but I did get EBM (Front 242, Neon Judgement etc) with Ultravox "Guitar"

Interesting and likable at the same time. Good.

Have you thought to use something like the noise remover in Sound Forge to clean up the hiss. That would leave the mix basically perfect esp for the age.
