Drivers/hardware support is the main challenge with a 64bit OS. Plus, the hardware level data transfer, for most o/t buses are still 32bit today, while CPUs support 64. :P

Lots of 32bit software may work under 64 (using WOW64), but the trouble is their installers (which may be 16bit). Then again, most o/t freeware (like .dll), for example, don't need to be "installed".. Thus, one can install in 32bit, copy the files into an archive, then uninstall. And when needed (in a new machine/OS), just copying the "installed" folder, will do. The lighter the registry, smoother the OS, right?

Here's some good info on 64bit to start with:

thanks for the info bos,

i am hoping i can still use audacity and my presonus firepod on the new machine, gotta do a backup run on it before i mess with anything.

if it will see the 1394 express card and the firepod (unlike this pos dell) i am gonna be a happy man.
i will just use it for recording, and that's it.

if it won't work, then the key will be getting it converted to xp i guess..

but will a 32 bit os run on a 64 bit processor?

guess i'll be finding out. :-o

in the meantime, i found this, which appears to be some kind of virtual vst rack or something,

Yeeah, for "field" recording, a laptop would be greeatt... BTW, check these out, how much difference there is for data transfer speeds; PCI, USB, Firewire compared. A quick reference, MAXIMUM rates:

8,000 MB/s = PCI Express 2.0 (x16 link) <-- pop standard GPU slot
4,000 MB/s = External PCI Express (x16 link) (planned)
<-- imagine for ext. audio!
4,000 MB/s = PCI Express (x16 link) <-- another standard
600 MB/s = USB 3.0 (Planned) <-- coming 2010
393.216 MB/s = FireWire (IEEE 1394b) 3200 <-- da fastest FW @ the moment
300 MB/s = Serial ATA 2 (SATA-300) <-- pop HDD
250 MB/s = ExpressCard PCI Express mode <-- the fastest bus in portables
133.33 MB/s = PCI 32-bit/33 MHz <-- Ye olde standarde for soundcard & GPU
98.304 MB/s = FireWire (IEEE 1394b) 800 <-- E.g. RME Fireface 800
60 MB/s = USB Hi-Speed (USB 2.0) <-- current USB audio interfaces
49.152 MB/s = FireWire (IEEE 1394) 400 <-- E.g. Edirol FA-101
0.384MB/s = S/PDIF <-- :D
0.0039 MB/s = MIDI <--

I guess Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 are still fast enough for basic recording at 44k stereo?! TWIMC, Here a full list:
