Midi Quest 10 - Is it worth it?

Has anyone had experience using Midi Quest? I still have a bunch of older synths and modules I'm not using that are supported by MQ. I was thinking I may use them more if they were integrated into my system (DP 5).

The real issue is that the program is $300 for the XL version and that's not pocket change. If it really works well then I'll all in, but is $300 worth getting my D-110, TX-81Z and SY-22 going?

Just a quick note, if your MIDI interface isn't multi client, which most aren't, you can't use MQ and your sequencer at the same time - which is crap:), otherwise you can actually load it as a VST, blue

I'm using Digital Performer 5 and have the FXpansion AU to VST converter, so I think I'm OK.

Post

It has to with wether your MIDI interface is multi client or not, otherwise you have to close your sequencer, do your midi quest stuff and reopen your sequencer, silly:) blue

Yea...I'm a bit slow...thanks for the catch...

Ok, I'm using a MOTU Midi Express, it's about 6 years old.

Will that work?

Yes it is worth every coin and it helped me a lot!!!

I bought MIDIQuest XL 9 when it came out and I never got a moment's use out of it. It was crashy on both systems I tried it on and the profiles were useless for every piece of equipment I had. It was never upgraded to work, but instead went to version 10, a paid upgrade. I'll be damned if I am going to pay twice for an app that never worked in the first place. Come to that, I had the same experience with their other product, Infinity. For me, MIDIQuest was a complete and utter waste of money. Unfortunately, there really are no alternatives. SoundDiver is in limbo (and works poorly on Leopard) and development for Unisyn seems to have stalled a number of years ago. I am back to patching from the front panels...

Check out this. Dunno how good it is but it's free so all it takes is some time.

Yep, recently took notice of that one and will likely check it out... though I don't know if I would ever have the time it would take to whip up a Wavestation or Morpheus editor... :help:

So I picked up a cheap Novation ReMote SL Zero thinking it would be a good alternative and it's giving me way more agervation...

Has anyone had a good experience with MidiQuest?

I only can speak for their demos. Bad experience! Some crashes in all versions I tested. In the last demo (XL 10) are some big bugs so its not usable. The support wrote, that this bugs are well known since days and not fixed in the demo yet
I have no idea why Soundqest have a demo version which is not working on some systems because of known bugs.
Soundquest seems not very interested to sell something.

Btw. If you have a chance to get Sounddiver, try this. Well, is no longer supported from Apple since they bought Emagic but its working.
I use the with my Access Virus shipped OEM version of Sounddiver. Works great without major problems.

Well i don't know where is a problem. I use it daily inside FL Studio and Cubase. It is working as supposed. I can control my lexicon reverb, my hardware synths and everything is indeed working like a charm. It took me a while to learn how to set up everything(midi routing) but now when i know i can really say it is nice piece of software making my outboard gear to be controllable inside my favorite host.

IMHO useful software!

i almost bought MIDIquest time ago, when i saw a 2nd hand copy floating around in the Market Place..i always found it very well conceived and graphically built on paper, and definitely when i tried it in the past, it sorted me out of much programming on the HW outboard field from tiny little LCD screens,,
that said, its unbelievable that the app is still such expensive, after so many versions, and still has a lot of bugs, particularly in the vst versions, as testified by several posting of users...
i dont know..maybe tho, if i was on the Soundquest crew, id try to lower the price tags, particularly now, when even the VST and MIDI controllers market is cloagged up with so many options..
unless an user has an extensive use of hw synths or runs a studio, i doubt some one nowadays will buy the whole thing to run it on a couple of hw thingies with such price tag..
i repeat, i like the app , really...ages ago when i was outboard based it would have been heaven sent for tweaking my machines...
nowadays i barely switch on the alpha juno 1 or the bass station (that anyway i own even in "virtual version"), so it s almost pointless for me using it..
I have no idea why Soundqest have a demo version which is not working on some systems because of known bugs.
this anyway is total commercial suicide (not the label :P) marketing, if thats true and not a typical public justification

my 2 cents anyway

I'd get it for my hardware units (E-MU, Kurzweil, Yamaha MU-15/RY-30), but that things is so darn expensive.

Then again, I suck in terms of creating my own SYSEX Mixermaps for Cubase... so I don't have that many alternatives to use "all" of those synths like I want (like a VSTi) in my prefered hosts.

Interesting discussion since I've been looking at this as well. On paper, it seems like it would be great to have editing facility for all my hardware in one package. So in that sense, the relatively high price is almost worth it as opposed to buying a bunch of dedicated editors.

It seems like in reality this is mostly a no-go though, huh?

I'm glad to be reading this discussion because it makes me think twice whether to go the SoundQuest route and waste money I don't really have. My experience is with SoundDiver, which seems to be another "looks good on paper" type app. When it works, SoundDiver is fantastic, but it seems to mainly not work. Even when it does work, it seems to only work as long as you only do very limited things. Sometimes it seems that if you even look at the screen the wrong way, down it goes. <sigh>

As it is, I have a number of dedicated editing programs, quite a few of them from Sound Tower, and those seem to work really well and as advertised. At this point though, I cannot recommend Sound Tower either since they don't seem too good at communicating.

I would also caution against some of these software editor companies who advertise free upgrades for life when you buy their program. This would be Sound Tower and the other guy who does the Pulse and Virus editor. As with SoundQuest, it all looks good on paper and while these other programs seem to work like a charm, all is well until you try to take them up on the "free upgrade" offer, for example, if support for a new OS is needed, etc. Then you never hear from them, or you get your upgrade after having to seek them out and ask for it. That is, it's entirely up to you to find out whether something has been upgraded and to make an effort to try and get said upgrade. This effort doesn't always succeed. I realize that these are small companies, so if you can't offer free upgrades, don't advertise them - or charge a nominal maintenance fee if you need to. I can understand that.

As far as the software for hardware editing market is concerned, judging by this discussion as well as my own experience, the key words definitely seem to be: buyer beware.
