Howard shows what i call 'digital', so please. Why don't we start claim prosecution here? He failed.Echo Voodoo wrote:Howard made a statement and was challenged to back it up with an example. He did. Urs made some statements and then backed them up with examples to demonstrate his point.
You made statements and were asked to back them up and you... claim persecution?
I'm absolutely sure Urs is talented he has a lot of (analogue gear and) experience to trick on every tester.
p.s. As I said, sample on weekend (or next week, really depends on all tomorrow parties).

You made a statement that Earth is round so you should be prosecuted if you don't provide a sample or backup your claim.

I agree, the sample that the specialist posted is closer to the original than the clip that Howard posted. I don't think anyone is going to flame djanthony for saying so.david.beholder wrote:Bewaredjanthonyw wrote:Sylenth is definitely closer.![]()

To re-hash: you said that Howard's sample "proved" that Zebra sounded digital and Sylenth1 sounded analogue. I wondered how this "proved" your claim since there wasn't a comparison to Sylenth1 trying the same sound.
Now there is a comparison, thanks to thespecialist. Rejoice, you can drop your persecution complex now and revel in a direct comparison of 2 digital synths emulating a particular analog synth sound. If you honestly feel that this comparison "proves" your point, then everyone's happy.
For the record, they both sound pretty close to me. I don't have speakers or ears good enough to distinguish the finer points between them.

I do like Sylenth - there are some things it does really well and I've used it quite a bit. In terms of sounding all velvety and furry and just a little ragged around the edges (in a good way), some of the things I mentally associate with "analog," though, I get a little more of that vibe out of ImpOSCar's filters, myself.
If you want to get closer to those kinds of qualities in Zebra, you have to work at contriving them, choosing the right modules in the right configuration with the right settings (something that guys like Howard, Michael, Menno etc. are far better at than I am). I consider some of the basses in Menno Meijer's "Zebra Food" bank for Z2 to be some of the best analog-style bass sounds I've heard out of any softsynth. I have 5 or 6 tweaked variations saved for some of them - great stuff.

Is it though??
The Sylenth1 sample lacks brightness, and the Zebra one is a little too bright, both are close but neither wins in my opinion.

Uhm, with that and previous statements, do you accuse me of cheating with the audio examples?david.beholder wrote:I'm absolutely sure Urs is talented he has a lot of (analogue gear and) experience to trick on every tester.

I own Sylenth and not Zebra (Ok Zebra CM but that does not count I guess)and would love to confirm the claim, but I can not unfortunately. My ears tell me that Howard's example is closer. BUT....I am still waiting for Urs to reproduce that Mopho demo tune I posted, especially the bassdjanthonyw wrote:Sylenth is definitely closer.

The resolution was for the bass sounds, not for the oscillators...elxicano wrote:So, what's up with 9-13?

First, i want ot say thanks for vst code archive. Helped me and few of my pals. (I think Bram should be listed too)
Second, right. Sorry, you never paid any attention on me. I admit, my fault!
I think all this osc tests are little bit goofy. You know how your oscs are working or what is the difference between it and moog. So you could work out in any direction. I mean you could make situation when z oscs would be noticable more analogue than moogs. Could it be considered as cheat... it depends on situation.

The samples are as clean as it gets, everything properly recorded using the very same gear, resolution and what not. The Moog and the other plugins (two widely "favoured" synths among these) of course always have a lowpass filter on them, hence it was reasonable to also lowpass filter the other analogue oscillators and Zebra's. The effect of the lowpass filtering was demonstrated in another example which clearly shows that the differences between various oscillators are greater than the difference between the same oscillator dry and filtered.david.beholder wrote:I think all this osc tests are little bit goofy. The funny thing is that despite all the confidence that people show in the discussion ("Analogue oscillators do...", "Synth XY has more analogue sounding oscillators", "Zebra has a signature sound"), this confidence gets lost immediately when it comes to just listening. Which renders many opinions void (later on also about analogishness and phatness of bass sounds).
Another story is the idea of recreating patches. Flakey mp3s are neither really suited for cloning nor are they suited for listening. It's also not very helpful to unveil the names of the synths used before any A/B listening. Instead, the sound designers should be sent a good quality example privately, they sent it back to whoever has that analogue synth and then all examples should be posted for blind listening (original, synth x, synth y...). That would do.
Cheers,
