Another, just for fun. Made this in about 15 minutes this morning, listening to that damn chord progression over and over. Then I realized I was late to work(!), so I uploaded quickly, and I'm now posting the link from my office.

Hints: I thought the versatile filter(s) on this plugin would make the task easy(ish), but I found the challenge was the stages before and after -- matching the oscillators and the chorus of the original J106 example.

pretty close! A little more resonance and slightly faster Filter env and it would almost be perfect. Although the Juno filter sounds a little warmer to me...very close...

Getting close is easy, but that last 10% or so is a black hole of endless tweaking!

I would have kept at it if I wasn't late for work...

A quick bump before I identify the synth I used, just in case anyone wants to hazard a guess. In addition to the details I mentioned before, I'll note that the default sound of this mystery synth features heavy filter saturation, but you can cut pre-filter and boost post-filter to get in the zone of the sound I needed here.

Don't forget, the Juno has only 1 ADSR-envelope, used for both filter and amplifier. The main problem is matching the volume response to the envelope as I think it's neither linear nor exponential, but somewhere inbetween. The bass example sounds like the VCA was set to Gate instead of envelope, thus having a louder deep end, but maybe also responsible for the clicks.

My example was Fabfilter Twin 2, for anyone who's curious. I wouldn't have guessed this myself from hearing the example, since it's not particularly characteristic of Twin's sound.

Having not laid hands on a Juno 106 for ages (in the late 80s I worked in a Music Shop that stocked the instrument, but I preferred the JX3P for whatever reason), I reviewed the basic architecture, which is easy to discern from the front panel:



I started with something compatible, but for some reason I felt my results with Twin were closer if I used a Saw and mixed in a touch of a phase-locked Square one octave HIGHER -- just to send something brighter into the filters.

I had a Juno 106. It was all my brother and I could afford at the time. We thought it was great but really we had no idea. I think I was 17 or 18...

Basically it comes down to is there such a thing as "quality" when referring to a sound... or is there only character?

carefully modelled analogue Osc in timewARP. You can hear the differences fairly easily in the examples IMO...:

For giggles I got the Timewarp demo, but I was so annoyed at the presets that distort the channel. What's up with that? I know this isn't the pet peeve thread, but one of the sure ways to turn me off on your software is to give it presets that are all over the place in terms of volume.

I certainly do.
Really, if whatever softsynth I might demo would come with such demo patches, I'd probably not even touch a single parameter myself but trash it instantly, regardless whether it'd be the most faithfully recreated analog sounds.

I would however be thankful if someone recreated the sound from this song snipplet in Zebra:

Obviously it's the synth sound on the left. I did the snipplet that long because the entire character of the sound becomes more apparent later on. Seems to be a fairly easy sound to my ears (some LP filtered saw OSC(s) with a lot of cutoff velocity response), yet I haven't been able to get it done that well myself.

Fwiw, that's a song of the french band FFF (French Fonk Federation), which I will never ever forget. Seen them live two times and I'm not sure which of the gigs was the best live concert I've ever seen in my life. Too bad they don't exist anymore (they were boycotted by french broadcasting for political reasons, being too left wing, pro-drug use, and all that).
