thanks for the info., I think this feature's the one a lot of people are probably interested in, and not being able to trial it first does raise the curiosity.

Melodyne can indeed convert midi->audio, either in realtime to a vst, or export/save as a midi file.. Explanation pp.88-92 of the manual.

How's the timestretching with variaudio - same as MPEX or has it improved/differs?
(for that matter, and I could perhaps find this out more easily by searching the cuibase forum, has timestretch in general changed at all?)
How does it sound once you start to abuse it? At what settings does it begin to sound unusable for "real" sounds? (real vs. synthetic/FSU)

If you check out the Steinberg Videos on C5 you will see that Variaudio is yamaha technology.Audiowarp in Cubase uses Zplane technology
I think you are wrong !

About VariAudio:

The pitch correct plugin is Yamaha tech, Variaudio is Steinberg/zPlane tech.

I've been under the impression as well that it's Yamaha technology. Thanks for the headsup :)

Here's a q'n'd translation:

"About VariAudio:

Because it has been especially important for us to integrate pitch manipulation into Cubase, making a not yet reached workflow possible by the total "interleaving", we had to develop the functionality almost exclusively internally to Steinberg. Only for the algorithms we acquired the help from the specialists from zplane."

Yep. Just imagine the MIDI possibilities. Record a part with an electric guitar and play it back as a piano, or a string ensemble. Or dig out your old jam sessions you've long since forgotten how to play and have instant transcriptions. Or finally figure out that funky chord Steely Dan hits in [fill in the blank]...
not quite.
DNA does not work well in an entire mix context.
Unless you have a recording of an artist playing only the guitar (or some other instrument) with minimum other instruments or vocals in the background, Melodyne will not be able to determine the exact chord that was played.

Just thought I'd say that Variaudio is very good. I've just used it on a vocals file (I used to have mixed feelings about pitch correction but heck, this is 2009 after all) and I was surprised how natural it sounds. You can also push it more and get Autotune-like "TPain" FX if that's what you're after.

I tried Autotune uno or whatever before and of course it's not in the same ballpark. I also tried the Melodyne standalone demo and found it much less intuitive. In C5 it's just a matter of double clicking an audio clip and either fine tuning each tone or correcting the whole thing in one fell swoop.

I can't say I have tested it and Melodyne extensively enough to make a point by point comparison but so far so good.
