Yeah, $1599 USD and that's just for the 25 expansions that have been released to date. Regarding Kontakt, I'm on the verge of buying it myself, but you may find the demo to be of little worth - NI only includes something like 8 patches with the demo. But, the patches they do include sound excellent IMO and, having already owned a half dozen NI products, I have no doubt that Kontakt is a quality instrument. Besides, with all the sample libraries available for it, finding/creating exactly what you're looking for should be no problem.

Isn't the idea behind the expansion, that you can CHOOSE what you want to buy and what not?

Man if only it were THAT simple. There's only 3 expansions I don't own one of which is BASS. I just don't see a need for it since I have Trilogy and Omnisphere.
Just saying those expansions are addictive as hell. I'll never invest in another Nexus-type instrument.
