Always grind by hand!subtlearts wrote:I grind beans by hand (roast them myself sometimes too) and my morning cappucino(s) take on aspects of religious experience.
I imported a lot of whole beans from Cuba and Costa Rica when i was on vacation there, and also frequently purchase italian imports. Always whole beans, you can't beat fresh-ground coffee. The taste and aroma is just amazing.
Never tried to roast them myself, often thought about it though. How do you go about it? Any special equipment you need?

Agreed re whole beans. Fresh is even better, most people don't know what it tastes like actually - the flavour really changes (and not for the better) when the beans have been sitting around for more than a couple of weeks, even in a freezer or vacuum bag. They are at their absolute peak about 3 or 4 days after roasting.
I don't have one, but knowledgeable sources tell me that the current be-all-and-end-all of home-roasters is the Gene Cafe: http://www.genecafe.co.kr
I actually use a funky old hand-cranked stovetop thing, found it at a flea market, like two little pans welded together with a hole cut in the top to get beans in/out, a lid on that, and a handle that turns a kind of sweeper thing inside to keep the beans in motion while they roast. Works pretty well but fills the whole apartment with smoke and roasting coffee smell; fairly pleasant in fact but a bit intense and I haven't been doing it much since we have a little one on the scene these days.
ummm... How's that compressor coming along?

I think the coffee maker was side-chained to The Glue which is why it tasted so good...

Yea, I still think you should have waited until someone who didn't realize it was a joke replied.
