If you are really interested, I suggest asking Kingston how he built his. It is a "high-end" version, components costing around 500 euros but is sound a lot better than the basic version living sounds just pointed to (I know because I've done direct A/B comparison between them).

I can post some audio clips of the differences once Kingston has finished the box.

Cheers!

The stereo sidechain (or rather, the sidechain reacting to absolute amplitude rather than the summed sidechain of the gyraf version) is just another flavour really. It is how the actual SSL mixbus compressor from the 4000 console reacts, but it will not matter much with most signals, since the bass usually has the highest amplitude and is more or less mono in most cases.

You can upgrade the components, of course, but then it won't sound like an SSL compressor any more. I used high quality caps in the signal path and got vintage 5532/5534 opamps, which sound punchier and more exiting, especially in the bass than current ones. I've also added a sidechain filter.

But I'd love to hear Kingston's version! What did he change? Use vintage DBX VCAs? Discrete op amps? I'll probably build a high end version one day, too. But the version I got here really doesn't sound daft at all.

Hi Everyone,

I've finished the custom build system which creates a custom binary with your registration information "burnt in". This took a little doing, so sorry for the delay. I am currently sending out the custom builds to everyone in the order they have paid, so everyone should expect their full version within the next several hours.

After all that is done I will upload the Trial version that has no noise so everyone can try it out.

Cheers Andy, if your ever in the Islington area on a Saturday night pass by my gig and il buy you a drink for your effort

Cheers. Much appreciated!

It seems particularly well suited to sidechaining. Been using Ableton's stock SC stuff recently, Waves from time to time, and this certainly gives you a more dramatic, pumping effect. Find I really have to push it to get enough gain reduction with a fast enough recovery.

Thanks.
That ball is in Digidesign's court at the moment, I'm still waiting for the official legal nod to be allowed to release an RTAS version, hopefully soon.

Well, you are completely wrong about the sidechain thing not making much of a difference. That's what I thought too first, before I heard it in action. Kingston has it on a switch, original gyraf side chain -> oxford mode. Big difference on ALL stereo material, no matter if it has bass or not.

I'll post clips once we get it back in the studio and I'm sure Kingston will be glad to answer any PM you send him about it. I don't know what components he changed except the much higher quality "jelly beans" (those small IC's). They usually cost like 40 cents each but he replaced them with some costing 10 times the price and it seems to make quite a difference (when compared to the unit we have at the studio which is the exact Gyraf SSL clone + the stereo sidechain). It also measured ridiculously well, self noise below 110dB, total mastering grade stuff.

Cheers!

The presets are still under way and will be released with a future update soon. An manual will be done as well, and a readme and a few other touches to finish the packaging. If you would like some help with using the compressor till the presets arrive I'm sure everyone here will be able to help out :)
