well poo on apple. they should know better than to use excessive throttling just to make their MTBF look better on the hardware.

Hey, i have been doing a lot of testing recently, cause i have been a bit underwhelmed with the performance of both my core 2 duo 2.4ghz macbook pro and quad xeon mac pro desktop.

Although the mac pro was performing better overall per core, the difference was not staggering, and i wanted to find out why, particularly when i knew the intel throttling was turned on very high on the mac book pro.

WELL...

some shocking results.

the speedstep is also heavily activated on the desktop.

Even in bootcamp, with vista power saving set to full performance, which should give the processor maximum frequency all the time, it was still idling at 2.4ghz with an occasional jump to 2.8.

I've been saying this for over three years now, hopefully someone will take notice.

Logic in OSX on the mac pro is using an entire core and crackling with 12 voices on a particular albino patch by vst soundbanks, which actually does say in the patch name "cpu unfriendly" lol. But on cubase on vista the same patch with 12 voices is using 60%

I couldn't agree with you more. And If I understand you, I could bring that icrash I mentioned down with 3 voices of sculpture, Where as it ran fine on a lesser G5. Can you say "apple shit isn't coded properly for intelmac even though it's their hardware?" I knew you could.

I tried it on the mac book pro and could only get like 6 voices before crackle. so i downloaded and bought a little program called coolbook, www.coolbook.se

i made a set frequency for the mac pro at 2.4ghz, basically coolbook forces it to stay at maximum. Wouldn't you know it, now I am getting about 60% of one core in logic using 12 voices of that patch.

That is good news, to some degree

So the mac book pro 2.4ghz is outperforming, per core, by a wide margin, the xeon 2.8ghz!!

This is showing how much speedstep is robbing of our performance, in oSX on the mac pro desktops.

There is no way to disable it unfortunately on the dekstop, i have been searching for days..

I'll just say I'm sorry for the trouble

this is kind of disturbing, and even more reason to put together a hackintosh.

the core speed will ramp up when all 4 cores have significant activity, but it just WOn"T when you are pushing one core hard.

This is the thing, though many computers/mobos/daw-software are LAME at dealing with this wonderful world of "multicore", apple seems to be the worst offender. Maybe I'm off the mark of your post but it seems that the apple stuff ONLY pushes one core most of the time. You'd think that considering their "holy" attitude towards hardware (and software actually) they would make CERTAIN that "their" multicore comps/soft would be the shizzle.

I am sure the nehalems will be much different cause they have turbo boost which is designed just to boost one core.. but, i haven't got 6 grand just to test one lol.

Yes, I do. But I went through the hell-of-hells trying to explain to many parties (sans kvr!!!!!!!!) what I was going through and eventually just gave up and went back to windoze. My cores are at the very least not going to any of those extremes.

i am guessing under osx the xeon is idling at around 1.6 - 2 ghz.. we are really being robbed of power here.

there is no way to know exactly cause there is no utility under osx reporting the real current clockspeed of the processor

Sorry, seems to be stating what you already did.

In closing, before the thread gets out of hand, I'm really sorry to hear this. I bash apple all the time but in reality I wish these problems would be fixed.......as with cubase........as with vista........etc.......etc.

Well that is good. On my system with logic pro 7.23, it would basically just use up one core, max out, stutter, and usually crash. And it has nothing to do with selecting mulit core or anything like that.

Anyways, regardless of mac/pc/whatever, you'd think that they would want to check/fix these kinda things.

It can be for both enabling speedstepping and for stopping it from stepping down.

I've had people in the NI forums that claim that using the kext will help prevent speedstepping to a great degree. However, like
QuietMBP, Coolbook and the like, your temps will go up, so it's a definite at your own risk "fix".

Yep, like Ew said you can use it to set your CPU to one speed. And like Ew said, it's at your own risk, hence me saying make sure to read the posts on that forum.

I have yet to bring my 8-core MacPro to its knees, and that's using Live 8 with all kind of softsynths like Analog, Zebra 2, Massive, etc. I don't worry so much about the speedstepping issue you were describing personally...
