A quick question about the drum products that use I-map:
I've recently expanded my e-drum setup to the point that I'm using 2 brains now and the easiest and most consistent setup for me would be to program the hardware to the GM standard. In the cases where a product has both GM and I-map layouts, is the level of detail (multi-samples etc) the same between the two? In other words, is the layout the only difference?
Other than the sweet finger-drumming aspect of I-map (which doesn't affect me in this case) are there any advantages to the i-map that I may be missing out on by going GM?
This is more specifically in relation to Capsules, tanks, and SS|ST libs if that makes any difference.
Thanks!
I-map vs GM drums

It makes LESS of a difference with those but there is still a difference. iMap isn't just "hey let's move things around and go against the standard". The main reason to go against that standard is to accommodate MORE performance articulations than GM offers. Also GM is trying to factor in hand claps, percussion and misc things that we think can just be put onto a separate midi channel and use the keyboard or other midi controller to have MORE for doing JUST drums on one midi channel.
That doesn't mean GM isn't still good though. We do enhance our GM usually to replace a few things like claps etc. In our Drum Masters/Infinite Player GM kits we ALSO give you a bunch of the extra hits from imap hanging around outside of the GM map so people that use controllers mapped to GM could pull in a few extras (but that's not the case in the Capsules, SS2 etc.)
So, bottom line is that in many ways iMap is better... but GM is more convenient. If it were me I'd take the effort to map my drum controller to iMap if it could take advantage of the additional hits. If not then I'd just go GM.
In the not too distant future we're going to have an update for Drum Masters/Infinite Player that will allow it to remap in the plug-in and possibly do easy alt/round robin and other features. So that's a more deluxe route to go for drums since we're actively refining that format and not so much the previous ones (apart from an eventual SS3 which is in the works).
