As long as I'm happy, I don't care what anyone does, but why anyone would want to actually sound like anyone else is beyond me. You can't play a note that hasn't been played somewhere before, so you might as well try to arrange them your own way.

I've always tagged my own stuff as "Psychotic Northwoods Basement Trash", and that pretty much sums it up. I'm sick of all the copy-cat crap that tends to make the charts, and after 30 years of playing everyone else's "chart topping" un-creative shmooze for audiences that wouldn't know a drum rudiment from a I-IV-V chord progression, I decided to try NOT to play anything that sounded like ANYONE else ever again. I had an original posted on soundclick that ranked #309 out of 189,273 in it's genre and #30 out of 31,380 (or so) in it's sub- genre. And hey, that works for me. If by some quirk that would happen to make me a leader, I pity the fool who follows!

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet or not, but a third option would be that some people just want to do what successful people do in order to be successful. "There is nothing new under the sun" applies here in droves. Everyone is influenced in SOME way, even if only in a small way. And some more than others, and everyone for their own reasons. Some people think they HAVE to have sound "x" or sound "y" to succeed. Some think they have to have their own sound to succeed. Some people recognize that you can learn from the trial and error of others and see that certain things do work, and they emulate that. It may be a sound, a technique, a business plan, whatever.
I don't think it's so black and white really.

I'm confused. Is cleaning a toster with a butter knife a good idea or a bad idea?

Chuck, it's about time you started taking notice of an old homily...if you can't say something nice, STFU. Are you an angry old man or just acting like one? You're as mute-worthy as they get.Chuck E. Jesus wrote:you are an idiot...eduardo_b wrote:Originality is overrated.

Re. originality, 'you're an idiot' has been done before on this forum .... but in musical terms, maybe the key to that elusive new genre?

I didnt think this thread would generate so much thought and of course the random sh*t talker (god bless you).
I totaly understand everyones views on this subject. I understand that to even be able to pick up a musical device, whether a Tuba or a computer one must first use sounds, chords, samples, melodies, and so on and so forth that its pretty much impossible to be 100% original, thats a given.
I thank every one who has tooken(taken) the time to comment here on this. I'm a follower in many respects as is pretty much every one who has commented. Are you the first to use FM synthasis, or what about a snar drum rammed through reverb? I guess its how you take what youve learned and what you feel and combine that with what you know to get the final resualt.
Now back to my vodka and "mini STudio" located in a hotel in Salem, Oregon.........
Thanks again!
(i refuse to use spell check as that is not original)

So you think originality is over rated? to me, blowing off originally like it means nothing makes me think that you must have bad taste in music. no offense intended, but to me music that lakes originality overall is in the "bad taste" category.eduardo_b wrote:Originality is overrated.
