I don't know who this was meant for (and if I was among the chosen, I absolutely couldn't care less if I wanted to), but the use of the term middlebrow caught my attention.

Care to elucidate regarding your choice of this term?

I have never referred to those who work in experimental music as failed musicians. I would hardly call the cacophony of much experimental music ambient in any sense of what the original meaning of it was. The term experimental is, as I've said, self-defining. It is not music in the traditional sense nor will most people consider it music. If you think you can prove otherwise, you are doomed to endless failure at doing so. It is what it is -- fringe "music" that has virtually no appeal outside a very select and tiny group of admirers.

Are these practitioners accomplished musicians? I don't know and I don't care. It doesn't matter outside the coterie of aficionados. There is no commercial viability for this stuff. It exists in a vacuum. Its insignificance is so overwhelming that no amount of marketing genius will ever move it beyond where it is now and forever will be.

It can be original to a fault and it still won't matter. If it were all to disappear right now, no one would know.

My point? All of this defensiveness is misdirected. Even if those who do experimental music are accomplished musicians, to all but a few it sounds quite the opposite. Is that because most people are simply too ignorant to appreciate these works, such as they are, or might it be that it's really so far removed from what is considered music by the vast majority of people that those who defend it are oblivious of just how far from the mainstream they are.
