Wonderful little piece originally written with a Theremin in mind, but frequently (like the Thomas Bloch performance I'm listening to) it's replaced with a Ondes Martenot, due to the sheer difficulty of getting it right with a Theremin.

Sounds intriguing and shows my continuing ignorance. I didn't know that music was written specifically for the theremin I just assumed it was used as accompaniment.

Delightfully strange, bits are like William Tell meets the original Star Trek theme. Although it looks to me like the Theremin player is hamming it up a little...

Yeah, definitely a bit over the top compared to Bloch's performance with the Ondes, and they've only got an excerpt of it up… you wouldn't know it from how cheerful the passage they chose was, but the very beginning of it (which gets reprised later on) has a wonderfully intense, almost Shostakovitch-like quality to it. Seems like they chose the most "novel" sounding bits for that clip, when the piece itself (I think it runs around 14 minutes or so) really works better as a whole. I'd link to the piddly little excerpt they have of it on Amazon, but they just happened to choose thirty seconds of it that had no Ondes Martenot at all.
