Garry has been known for his shannanigans in the past, but even synthetic (who works for Tascam) has confirmed that this is the case over on VI-control.

Sheez though, they could have picked the timing a little better for an announcement than April 1st.

I mean, it would be a cruel joke if someone got our hopes up of reviving Gigastudio.

Plus, I'm puzzled, I thought Garritan worked on his own sampler awhile ago, so why buy Giga?

I have already posted my thoughts over on the VI-Control forum, but will repost them here:

I dunno. I'm a bit dissappointed by the announcement tbh.

GPO, JABB, Garritan Pocket Orchestra etc, all of these demonstrate that Garry's focus is firmly on laptop-based, sketchpad-type libraries rather than highly detailed orchestral streaming libraries.

And with the exception of the Bosendorfer? he has not produced a large detailed library in years (since GOS).

Sorry to be pessimistic, but I doubt that developing GS further as a sampler is on his agenda.

My guess is that he will hack out the good bits (the DEF, PRF and Gigapulse convo), and ditch the rest (abandoning the .gig file format and the kernel streaming).

It's also worth noting that none of the Giga development team has been retained, and only the code has been purchased:

"But we don't have the original Giga team - and we have two million lines of source code to go through. Some of that code is fifteen years old."

Anything is better than extinction. I would have thought the Tascam giga coders lost their jobs ages ago, and would take a little effort to find, and rehire, assuming they found work in the interim. Linux Sampler makes good use of giga giles, and along with the windows version, is getting pretty solid, so bargains on giga file collections are useful. If Garritan keeps that format at least an option, that's even better news

Unless you wanted an actual SAMPLER.

My point is that GS, GVI and Gigapulse will all be discontinued and that the technology will most likely be absorbed into the ARIA PLAYER, purely for playback of Garritan's own sample libs.

For those who wanted to actually sample like they used to, they will most likely be SOL.

Go to the Garritan page, click on the link in the box that the announcement is in, and open up the FAQ and the announcements. It says Gary worked on the Gigaharp in the late 90s and Giga's orchestral strings samples before going out on his own to start Personal Orchestra.
