So I finally finished the new version of STMNO (See here for info on the old version).
This version gets a new name, fixed bugs, errors and misfires found in the previous version. Its faster, much more reliable and no longer depends on MIDIdsm to strip out non note data.
As per request MFS now creates a copy of the original file instead of overwriting it. When applied to a MIDI file you get a new version named like this *filename*_stripped.mid.
I added error checking in this version so if your having problems simply send me the log file (found in the \Program Files\MIDI File Stripper\log folder) and I should be able to figure out the problem.

MIDI File Stripper is a shell application that strips out all message data from a MIDI file except Note On/Off data. To use it simply install it, then right click on any MIDI file and choose Strip MIDI File.

Please note that if you have STMNO installed on your system MIDI File Stripper will remove it. Also it will leave MIDIdsm and its associated dll files untouched. If you need to uninstall MIDIdsm please do so with the uninstaller that comes with it.

I'm looking for as much feedback on this as I can get so feel free to test this out an post any and all of your results here.

I should have a dedicated webpage up for this soon so please bare with the slow server for now...

Thanks again all and enjoy!

does it remove the instrument info - cause that would be good.. i need single channel midis for vocding... but sometimes the midi won't let me change patches... so i get frustrated and go do something else...

It should. Give it a try or send me the file and I will make sure it does! See pm

I've uploaded a fix. Will have a reformulated version up soon that excludes the timesignature track ;).

You can download the fix from the above link.

I appreciate you bringing this issue to light sinzero.

Please, if anyone finds a problem or wants a new feature please post it and I will take a look.

OK I couldn't get it to work (WinXP SP3, tested w/ eXT 1.4 and Reaper 2.5 so far). Here' what I did:

I installed Midi Fime stripper first; it shows in the start menu (although only an uninstal option appears - but I suppose this is how it should be since it's a script? )

- created a midi file in energyXT,
- added some notes and some cc messages, exported it to my desktop.
- On desktop, I right clicked the created file: the "strip midi file" does not appear in the contextual menu.

- To check, I imported same midi file in Reaper
- added some more cc messages
- exported that to new midi file on my desktop
- On desktop, I right clicked the created file: the "strip midi file" does not appear in the contextual menu.

both files have a .mid extension, but even with .midi, nothing shows in the contextual menu.

By default my midi files are associated with Winamp, if this makes a difference.

This midi file stripper is a great idea! Thank you, Optomadic.

But I have a little reservation, because it comes with an installer and it even adds something to the shell.

Wouldn't it be easier to have a little program, which can just be started as exe - and needs not to be installed - and can even be started from a stick?

Many small programs - even audio editors - work in such an easy way: Start the exe and there it is. Then add a file and do a convert.

Only my small suggestion.

Hi enroe and thanks for your input. I could easily add a GUI and ability to select different settings etc. The thing is, this is meant as a one time quick process to get out non note info added by hosts or even some hardware controllers. For this reason, I'm trying to avoid opening another window. I may, in the future, add a small GUI on right click of a MIDI file as long as it does not slow the process of filtering out messages. With regards to running this on a stick, as long as the system has MFS installed, you could run it from anywhere. I will look into making a portable version that you drag a MIDI file onto.

In the meantime check out MIDIdsm for more control and portability.

Thanks for the suggestion :tu:.
