Yeah let us now when you can smuggle some free time, apart from some legal bullshit over getting custody of my lil' princess i do not have any plans or worked lined up at the moment so i will no doubt be able to make it whenever is good for you. Yeah vurt and Steve/AZR; my Metallica ends at '...And Justice' and it always has done (i don't like Bob Rock and never have done!) and Rick Rubin is well past his glory days imho.

A Parting Rant About Mastodon for you Steve/Radio AZR:

Mastodon have used Matt Bayles (check out his credits on Discogs as its impressive [Botch, Isis, Horse The Band, Norma Jean & many more] http://www.discogs.com/artist/Matt+Bayles) and he does a fine job usually i reckon bar Blood Mountain but that is as much the song writting as sound i think) on every EP/Record up to and including 'Blood Mountain' (which they had signed to a major for anyway so that may have had a hand in it also) but this new one 'Crack The Skye' was overseen by 'Andy Walace' whom litteraly had just wrapped up/finished work on the latest by AC/DC 'Black Ice'. The heavyness went on 'Blood Mountain' and 'Crack The Skye' reminds me even more of a classic 70's rock type guitar tone with everything else a bit more upto date and whilst not a bad thing at all: it just is not working for me and further heaviness has been lost in favour of proggy 70's like guitar work and much more melodic vocals. Albini would be good as he just sticks the band in a room, sets up his mic collection and there you go he captures what it really sounds like. Im no way saying its easy what Steve does as he has got it down to a fine art Anyways Mastodon rant over

Ah, the old days...I remember all the music the skater guys listened to well. Suicidal T., D.R.I., S.O.D., and of course alot of punk/hardcore. I had many skater friends, but didn't take up the hobby myself...being a larger fellow with a 14 EEE foot, skateboarding seemed a bit dangerous to me. Haha, funny you should say that… I'm listening to Consuming Impulse right now, due to Killvehicle talking about the new Pestilence earlier today!

As I said elsewhere, the new Pestilence is good, but it just doesn't feel like Pestilence to me. Too polished and modern to do justice to their old stuff (like Consuming Impulse), and too generic to due justice to their later stuff (like Testimony of the Ancients). It's still a good album, and certainly better than a lot of what passes for DM now, though. Plus, it's nice that one of the most talented metal bassists around is back to doing this instead of that gawdawful Latin pop band he's in.

That said, in 2005 Pentacle put out a far better "new Pestilence album" than Pestilence just did. Under The Black Cross is everything the new Pestilence album should have been.

My problem with, especially major label, metal at the moment is that a lot of it seems too samey or homogeneous. I'm not sure what I'm looking for but at the moment sludge and doom are doing it for me a lot more than death or black. Mind this is me getting back into metal after a 4 or 5 year hiatus so I'm no expert but things don't seem to have moved on very much. Like gangsta rap is stifling hip hop I think death metal may be having the same effect

With the exception of "retro" stuff like the Pentacle track I linked to, most new death metal doesn't really grab my attention, either. Especially the boring metalcore influenced crap like Job for a Cowboy . It seems like the last time the genre got stirred up was with the prog-rock influenced stuff like Opeth and Maudlin of the Well, but it's been a couple years since they had something innovative out. I reckon it's about time things got stirred up again.

Opeth I've heard but Maudlin of the Well is new to me, one more for the list

Maudlin of the Well were a prior incarnation of Kayo Dot, if you're familiar with them. They never really were what I'd consider a death metal band (they were too "all over the place" to easily pin down) but a few of their songs (like ) incorporated quite a bit of Death metal, while others () were far more prog oriented.
