Yes. The only way to extend them seems to be to involve people who are hostile to it.

When Sickle used to participate, they could get pretty wild, although there was usually very little serious discussion involved. Sometimes a few gems came out of them, though.

I actually think there are a lot of people across the globe who would be interested in such discussions. But there is no locus that draws them all together.

Even among the 'experimental' types, there are often vast differences in each person's tastes, methods of working, and results. Perhaps this ties into the difficulty of drawing them together. But that being said, there does tend to be more of a musically open-minded attitude among them/us regarding each others' works as well.

• What types of experimental music do you listen to?
  • Probably comes as no surprise that I find myself drawn to the "darker" or "harsher" side of things, although there are certainly exceptions. I'm not usually a fan of modern synth-oriented stuff, although I do find myself drawn to early electronic music. Mostly, my "experimental" interests lie with early industrial/power electronics/noise, modern classical, and free jazz. I'll throw in no wave and some of the more avante garde metal in there, as well.
• Who are some of your favorite experimental bands/composers?
  • The term is self is rather nebulous, as to some people (like me) it refers to the process, rather than the sound, while to others, it's a convenient catch-all to describe a sort of avant-garde, non "traditional" musical sensibility. Considering I don't always know the intents or working processes of the artists (and that I'm dead tired and lazy right now), I'll simply cave in and list those that probably fit the latter criteria, in no particular order:

John Zorn (and his numerous side projects), Igor Wakhevitch, Horrific Child, Peter & Caspar Brötzmann, Kaoru Abe, Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar, White Noise, Iannis Xenakis, Edgard Varese, Luigi Nono, Luc Ferrari, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Louis and Bebe Barron, John Cage, Olivier Messiaen, Krzysztof Penderecki, Gyorgy Ligeti, Jonathan Briley, Nebris, Sickle, Nurse With Wound, SIGHUP, Throbbing Gristle, early Univers Zero, Fantômas, Mr. Bungle, The Fugs, Sun City Girls, Blurt, Melt Banana, The Boredoms, Controlled Bleeding, The Flying Luttenbachers, early Einstürzende Neubauten, Whitehouse/Sutcliffe Jügend/Ramleh and other pioneers of early power electronics...
• Do you make (compose, perform) experimental music?

  • Hopefully I'll find some in this thread, I haven't looked around nearly enough to come up with anything really great yet.
• What do you think of the experimental music 'scene' on kvr?
  • There's a few folks here (vurt, runagate, justin3am, rachmiel, et al.) that stir up the usual café offerings with some wonderfully wild stuff.
The Experimental Krow Fraction DCLXVI Intl. Brigade commends them in their unrelenting assault on pop-fascist sensibilities. You shall all be awarded a Hero of the Glorious Din medal, my dear comrades.

Oh man, what a question after the 'experimental music defined" thread. I'm not savvy enough to be aware of "types" but IMHO any genre of music has some degree of experimentation during the compositional phase, but by the time it's usually performed or recorded that part is over and it ceases to have any form of experimentation. I think I consider what many people call "experimental" music "avant guard." This is what we called it in the 80s at least. So my idea of "avant guard" music comes from music who's roots go back to the early 1900s such as the composers of the dada movement. Not that "avant" I guess, but culture can more slooooooow.

Anyway, I love hearing anything that sounds new and different to me as long as it's done well.

Hm. My idea of experimental music has changed so much, but at one time I thought "I Am The Walrus" was the most experimental music in the world. Then I heard "Tomorrow Never Knows." Now those songs sound great, but old hat. I still love a lot of the old Laurie Anderson stuff, though her last show put me to sleep. I went though a John Zorn phase but I haven't listened to him or his knitting factory pals in a while. Bill Laswell and his mates have churned out stuff many might call experimental... I have no idea. Is Mouse On Mars experimental? Stuff on the Inertia label? Glitch? I have no idea... :help:

My parents would tell you "yes." I'm not so sure. Most of what I do is 100% improvised so there's always the element of experimentation for me. You'd probably say "no." Are you right or my mom?

Huh. Lately I just go to Pandora.com and type in the name of something and make a station. Last thing I think I typed in was "Yellow Magic Orchestra." They're kind of experimental japanese music I guess. I'm sure I couldn't really turn you on to anything you're not already aware of. I found some really great ambient stuff here: http://www.inertia-music.com/genre/AMBIENT/ I tend to enjoy ew's product demos when he posts them. ;)

Field recordings, noise, improvised/free jazz, electro-acoustic & conceptual musics.
who are some of your favorite experimental bands/composers?
Like many people here I listen to a lot of obscure artists/bands you probably never heard of: Archangel (Montreal based true ambient artist), makunouchi bento, pheek, Norman Fairbanks, Flesh For Frank, Howie b, Jesse Somfay, Ghislain Poirier, Soleil Vert, Goh Lee Kwang, Knurl & more...
do you make (compose, perform) experimental music?
I once did a noise project called "Brain Piss", it was an highly experimental project involving forest & nature's ambience/field recordings passing through a homemade distortion "ring". It was a couple of years ago & release on a tape in a very limited quantity.

There's a couple of very fine artist including Polyslax, vurt, 3am, runagate & many more very talented musicians here. More mature sound art if I compare to other forums & messageboards on the net!

what types of experimental music do you listen to?

Difficult to answer, really. I like everything from contemporary classical to ambient death metal. Generally, if it makes a sound I can appreciate it, even if it is just a field recording or something.
...

I don't know if you can call all of the following experimental (I really don't even know what that means :D ) but here you go: Dmitri Shostakovich, Sunn 0))), Stereolab (see what I mean? Are Stereolab 'experimental'? Well, *I* think so), Scott Walker (his more recent works could be classified as experimental, I guess), PiL, Tortoise, Exploding Star Orchestra, the psychedelia of Elephant Six... the list could go on forever.

As Tristeza Orange, I think I do. As Electric Sound Continuum I'm just a sissy. :hihi:

That's a bit difficult for me, as I tend to buy all of my music on CD and don't really check out net-labels. I know I should, and I think that our own Wakax does some pretty insane/beautiful stuff as Makunouchi Bento.

Other than KvR and Kara-Moon, I don't really visit any other music forums so I don't know what other experimental scenes exist out there. However, with people like Jazzyspoon, core, vurt, polyslax and justin3am around, I think we have a pretty strong, tight and collaborative family. :D

(edit: I love how I mentioned almost the same artists as SampleScience! :D )

I'm in the exact same boat. I don't think of Stereolab as experimental, so how can something that's subjective be defined? I think the flaw is the word "experimental." We need another more descriptive term. I used to think Laurie Anderson was wildly experimental, then I went to work for her and now she's just "Laurie." I think "progressive" is a better word. "Avant Guard" is OK but a little odd as this kind of music is having it's centennial.

I also placed this on another thread, for those who never heard about this outstanding musician. He inspired Miles Davis on his fusion years.

A true Experimental Artist.

Anything original enough, I'd say any sort will do.

who are some of your favorite experimental bands/composers?

Many years ago (I was in a school library) I read a book about composing music written by Pierre Boulez. I heard his name in a Frank Zappa interview, and after that I start listening to Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Varese, Terry Riley, etc. but I didn't appreciate that at first. I came back after going on with r'n'r experimentalists as Zappa, Fripp and Belew, Zorn, FSOL and others Then I went through a jazz phase without any particular appreciated artist.
Nowdays I listen to some of the stuff posted in the cafe

do you make (compose, perform) experimental music?

I try composing tracks. Not performing

what do you think of the experimental music 'scene' on kvr?

Not bad, not bad at all, even if it's just a minority.

I listen to mostly jazz, post rock, hip hop, ambient and electronica. I guess anything progressive requires a bit of experimentation to get a fresh sound.
Even hugely popular bands like Radiohead and Tool does a lot of experimentation.

My favorite heavily experimental artists are:
Autechre
Biosphere
Jaga Jazzist
GAS
Steve Reich
To Rococo Rot

Experimental music is IMO a lot about sound itself, which a lot of people don't really get. If people want to get more into it and understand it, I recommend reading up on John Cage and his quite philosophical and ground breaking view on sound design and composition.

what types of experimental music do you listen to?

Mainly pop-musicians trying to break the mold without smashing it to pieces.

who are some of your favorite experimental bands/composers?

Starting with the beginning, as a little boy I found my parents' Beatles records very intriguing - inventive and hard to pin down. In the nineties, Stereolab made me interested in music beyond anglo-american alternative pop with their references to music remote to me both in time, place and mindset, their drones, strange synth sounds, lo-fi fetishism, 20-minute tracks etc. They collaborated with people from the Chicago and Düsseldorf scenes, which never struck me as very experimental, but perhaps are. Anyway, I've listened to quite a bit of that as well. Later I've become interested in 80s sound such as early Scritti Politti, New Age Steppers, The Associates, A Certain Ratio, who were united by lack of fear for odd time signatures, dissonance and eccentric lyrics, yet managed to remain catchy pop music to my ears. A more recent album I listen to that I definitely consider experimental: Scott Walker's "The Drift". Heavy listening, though. For when the kids are in bed. Occasionally, I put on a cover CD from WIRE (the mag). There's always something strange and refreshing there, but I rarely bother to check out the artists any further.

No.

I don't get involved much, but some of the more helpful people here seem to be people with a healthy lack of respect for conventions.
