Why is Sonar still treated like the underdog?

Yeh Dave
i contacted cakewalk and here's what they said..
no refund whether credit card or not was used..they say how are we to know that you did'nt keep a copy for yourself..i thought that was a pretty un professional way to respond to a customer..
cakewalk should consider using a dongle for their products so software can be sold on..
cheers

It seems that most new sequencers don't have that until enough users complain about it not being there. I mean, it's not THAT much different to bounce to another track. Though I do like freeze and I know the benefits. We'll have to see how well the bouncing works, I guess.ttoz wrote:oops just read confirmation that studio one doesn't have traditional freeze. oopsies.
I am pretty sure they will add that and other missing features soon. At least it sounds like they will. It still seems pretty deep for a first release(jury is still out until I get my grubby hands on it though!).

Sorry to hear you don't like Sonar. I have used it for years and love it.rob_lee wrote:Sonar is like the worst thing i ever bought..i had it 6 weeks and deleted it from my hard drive..if i'd known how bad it was i'd have slapped the sales person who filled me with all the crap about how brilliant a switch i was making from cubase was gonna be...
Install Sonar 8pe...find that Rapture is LE version...find that there is NO portamento feature in Dimension Pro..find a vst called Z3TA that sounds piss poor (wanna be virus) NOT!
To call Sonar an underdog would be correct 100%..Bugs from day one until i downloaded 8.3 but by then it was too late i was sick of not getting anything done so i cut my losses and bought Cubase 5 and everythings back to normal.
Also cakewalks policy of not being allowed to sell on software means that i now have a brand new box that is useless that i cannot sell..ALTHOUGH PM ME AND I'LL SELL NO PROBS for peanuts...
Don't get me wrong some people love Sonar but it's just not for me..wish i'd never set eyes on it or allowed that squirmy little f**ker in the music store to convince me it was great...
Rob
3 things you say that are bad about it are just the synths that come with it.
Those are up to individual preference, some people don't like Rapture, and some love it. It IS the LE version, but you can't expect to get full versions of everything for how much the whole package costs. I think both those synths retail separately for around $199 a piece.
Before I buy something, I look into what really comes with it first.
When I upgraded from Sonar 5 to 7, I knew Sonar Studio 7 came with Dimension LE and Rapture LE, and I thought it was great since I could upgrade those (to their full versions)if I found I liked them and needed their extra features and presets.
As for any "bugs", many of those are addressed in the updates from the Cakewalk site, or they might just be user error with a certain function, or some conflict with hardware, or other plug-ins you use with it that have their own problems.
Cubase can have problems, this person was having a tough time while others didn't have the same issue: (might be user error I'd guess)

The EULA should also be read.

they need some stuff left for v.2 to milk the customers again (and keep the business alive) like all our beloved daw-defs do (Ableton Live without comping again and useless crossfades e.g.).koolkeys wrote:It seems that most new sequencers don't have that until enough users complain about it not being there. Well, that gives those who just love to complain something to, well, complain about as well!mellotronaut wrote:they need some stuff left for v.2 to milk the customers again (and keep the business alive) like all our beloved daw-defs do (Ableton Live without comping again and useless crossfades e.g.).koolkeys wrote:It seems that most new sequencers don't have that until enough users complain about it not being there. But seriously, most companies do it, and more than people know. Even independent devs do it(some have told me so even). Nothing wrong with thinking long term. Besides, coding that stuff takes work. Why should every feature under the sun be included in a first release so they can get paid once and not again? Sometimes the extra work requires extra payment. So spreading it out a bit is a good business move.
I don't know what the intentions of Presonus were on this, but it's likely that there is only so much they could put into a first version. Time will tell if the updates are big ones, paid for ones, etc.

I think your whole post is kinda weird because I see Sonar and Cakewalk being brought up in this forum all the time. Why anyone would want to discuss those mangey mutt-like dinosaurs of DX is beyond me...but still.Lunatique wrote:Although in the last few years Sonar has consistently gained industry recognition for innovation and features, for some reason it seems it's still treated as an after thought and an underdog by the music-making crowd. Why is that? It seems the pre-Sonar Cakewalk stigma is still kind of attached and people just seem to not think about it and only mention Cubase, Live, Logic, Samplitude...etc? (Well to be fair, no one ever talks about Digital Performer here either.)
I know we have a bunch of Sonar users here. So tell us what it is about Sonar that you love, and what features do you think it does better than other DAW's?

I'm just amazed anyone gets so upset about a host that they don't use, really.
i.e., "Methinks the lady doth protest too much"
I really like Cubase and Reaper in their own ways (they both excel in certain areas), but I've just found a comfortable and familiar workflow with Sonar (which for me was the best step up from Tracktion which sadly never advanced in certain areas, but which remains the most musician friendly app I've ever used). Can't point to anything in particular that I like about Sonar above the others, it's just how you feel when you open an app and just want the freedom to get down to business. Which any decent daw will let you do.
Some people hate Sonar. Meh, some people hate Family Guy. C'est la vie.

agreed. I have and use Logic 8, sonar 8, Acid 4, FL 8, reaper something or other(been a while since I downloaded it) and seem to be able to work in all of them without resorting to hate threads...fandango wrote:I'm just amazed anyone gets so upset about a host that they don't use, really.

I you were a software thief, why the heck would you purchase it in the first place when a Google search can find it free in 0.97 seconds?
And accusing an actual paying customer of potential thievery when they're the ones doing illegal things? (the no-resale policy is illegal in many countries, including your's truly).
When I read things like that I wonder why the heck am I sending money to software dev in the first place. Thankfully, there are some left that still treat their customers with a minimum of respect.
No, that wasn't me.
