Media Toggle/Trigger/Follow

I'm used to Live's different methods for triggering media or midi files. I would like to setup a midi note to trigger a media file. When I hit the note it starts the media, when I hit it again, it stops the media (toggle). I would also like to have multiple media files setup so when I trigger one, the previous one stops (this may be available through grouping, but I haven't figured it out). Finally, I would like to line up multiple media files and have them play one after the other. Any thoughts on how this can be accomplished?

This can be done through MIDI controller assignments:curucaman wrote:I'm used to Live's different methods for triggering media or midi files. I would like to setup a midi note to trigger a media file. When I hit the note it starts the media, when I hit it again, it stops the media (toggle).
* From the Setup tab click MIDI Controller Assignments.
* Scroll down to the media file in question and from the assignment for Play/Pause or Play/Stop
* Play the note to be assigned and click the Assign button.
Neither of these are currently possibly but there has been several other requests so something might be available soon.I would also like to have multiple media files setup so when I trigger one, the previous one stops (this may be available through grouping, but I haven't figured it out). Brad, Thanks but I think that a single note can only be assigned to one function (either play or stop), I can't have it toggle right (hit the note it starts, hit the same note it stops?)

Yep, you can. In the "Assign To" drop down list you'll see there's a couple of different ways to assign to a media file: Play, Pause, Stop, Play/Pause and Play/Stop. You want either play/pause or play/stop assignment.curucaman wrote:Brad, Thanks but I think that a single note can only be assigned to one function (either play or stop), I can't have it toggle right (hit the note it starts, hit the same note it stops?)
(Note: you need to be in the full MIDI Controller Assignments window, not the quick assign MIDI controller that you get from right clicking on the play button).

Yes,it is very useful to know! My thanks, as well.
I notice that a MIDI keyboard note assigned to toggle the transport between Play and Stop still sounds its original piano note when pressed. The same key assigned to a single function (Rewind) ceases to act as a piano key and goes silent.
This is not an actual problem, but I wonder if the difference is intentional.

Well spotted. Just checked the code and you're right... not intentional and will be fixed in next build.lallis wrote:I notice that a MIDI keyboard note assigned to toggle the transport between Play and Stop still sounds its original piano note when pressed. Brad -This is almost exactly the same functionality I was hoping for in the first couple of emails we had about Cantabile2! And you might now be on it?bradr wrote:Neither of these are currently possibly but there has been several other requests so something might be available soon.

I've added a couple of things related to the discussion here:
* Media groups now have two options "Exclusive Load" and "Exclusive Play". Load is the same as the old exclusive option. With Exclusive Play, only one media file in the group can play at once. So say you have 10 media files loaded, all assigned to a different key, playing one will automatically stop the others.
* 9 new MIDI controller assignments for:
- Load Next/Prev/First in group
- Load Next/Prev/First in group and stop anything in the group currently playing
- Load Next/Prev/First in group and start playing it.
These changes will be available in build 2033, available soon.

Brad - Kudos on the Media groups changes - can't wait to play with it and see what it can do. I cannot tell you how great it is to deal with a software company that actually listens to it's user base.. Thanks again. Joe

Concerning my personal experience "top ten software" is unique in realizing such things unbeliveably fast...curucaman wrote:... I cannot tell you how great it is to deal with a software company that actually listens to it's user base.. Thanks again. Joe

Build 2036 has some more new assignments for play next/prev/first in group.
