Hi gang,

Very close to purchasing Rhino, but I would like to hear some samples of it in a darker EBM/Industrial setting.

Any users here using Rhino in that fashion? I'd love to hear a quick sample if you are!

The demos I've heard so far are great, but all have a fairly happy tone... I want to hear Rhino in a darker/nastier setting. ;-)

Thanks,
Mike

what do you mean by "darker"?

if you want an [pulsating] atonal edge, that is easy with the pitch envelop and/or the user defined additive wave tool; i think several of the demo presets illustrate this.

if by darker you mean "deep throated", that is easy also -- pick a preset, and add (or change) one of the osc to be a sin wave pitched down -12 or -24 from the fundamental; then add it to the output stream with volume to suite your taste. if you want it to have a bit of deep growl, then self-modulate the sin sub osc (in the FM mod matrix). you can also use this sub osc to modulate other oscs, with varying degrees of success.

i can't remember if rhino's demo version can load banks or not, but if it can there are a lot of banks on the Big Tick site as well as Tim Conrardy's three banks at patcharena.com.

I'd start with Tim's bank #2. Tim does some great space patches, but as we know there are some darker reaches of space. Then maybe the ambient pads from the Big Tick site.

I have no trouble making dark music with rhino, minor and diminished, occasionally sus 4. But somehow my sense is a lot of the music makers above 120 bpm use z3ta. rhino imho needs some time to spread out. rhino is also a bit of a bear to program.

maybe it's not that it's so much of a bear to program, but it's a real bear to program it as well as Tom Conrardy, Daniel and Big Tick do. I don't have that same sense of that large a gulf with other synths.

that's just my opinion. rhino is my favorite synth for its sound, not for its ease of programming.

I've been playing a lot with the free microTera (which is 1/6 of Tera 2.0) It seems to me VirSyn has gone the extra mile or two in making programming usable sounds easy and enjoyable.

just because the demos are bright and happy, it is just as capable as anything else of producing very dark , eerie and supercomplex sounds. If you want harser/darker, start tweaking the mod matrix, and use both filters to your advantage.if I get a wild hair I will see what I can come up with...

@mikeleuz: EBM/Synth Pop - that´s why I bought Rhino many month ago. You always need more then 2-3 OSC´s when doing this NIN stuff or big hit, glassy, noisy bombast sounds like Apoptigma did. This all can be done with Rhino -> yes, Rhino can be very evil.

Ahh, and don´t foget the presets/banks, there are some up now, try the newer one because the old are maybe to much old school. Give them a try!

I almost want to go on a "Rhino can do EBM" crusade and build up a bank and some songs with it... it'd be a great exercise for getting to know it. :)

My music is tending toward a hybrid electro-VGM-EBM-ambient sound, if that makes any sense at all  and so far Rhino has mostly been a support synth. I feel it's capable of more. Pads definitely, and some great digital sounds, and wicked things with the tempo-synched envelopes.

How about RHINO SPEAKS on my bank2 ( or was it bank 1?? :? ) .... now THATS a wikid sound!

as people have put it here, you can get some very industrial type sounds. As I recall on my bank 2, I did a lot of atmospheres that put you in another world ( not talking about the algorithmics). Also the leads can be be very grinding as well. It depends how you play it it.
