Is it because of the featured synth? Or are we just getting better at this?
Anyone doin a track for the Tal-Elec7ro comp? ... looks like a great response over there!

I hope to do one, but I think I need to make some serious progress soon ... otherwise my time is gonna get split between gettin it finished, and gettin the next onesynthchallenge launched while the momentum is still healthy!

Anyway, I'm thinking about adding a prize for this comp to the prize already pledged by rob_lee..... I have something in mind.... i'll have a think about it .... it'll probably be a competitors prize again like last time rather than a winners prize.

Post

ok im gonna make a place to host the winning track on my site..check back in 30 mins or so...at the link in my post :) also the prize has been updated..there is now 2 banks each with 128 patches for sylenth = 256

tattiemannie wrote:OK, no problem .... I just need to know what format you want the preset saved in. What host are you using?

I've not ever saved/exported a preset in anything other than a fruity state file ( .fst ) format, but I'm sure I'll get there.

FWIW I used the factory snare preset as a starting point point for my hats.

Anyway, gimme a shout and I'll get on to it!
i use ableton live, but if you have a cool link showing the synthesis behind hats i can do them by myself... :)

Post

Hmmm ... would a screenshot be any good? ...Like of the panel with the settings for the hats? I could upload that fairly quickly.

Post

Actually, heres how you do it in 5 moves.

Select factory preset'snareblah'

Reduce Osc1 'Amp' level ( kill it! )

Change the filter type ... a couple of clicks will bring up a more suitable shape.

Increase the cutoff

Increase the resonance.

..You should now be able to hear what each of those moves achieves, and play around til its right!

Post

haha you beat me to it, i was about to write up a little step-by-step myself.

the main thing to remember when synthesizing hats and snares is that you're mostly only pumping volume-controlled white noise through a filter. so once you've got your amp envelope set (little to no attack, short decay to a quieter sustain, release to taste), then all you have to do is filter it, then distort/compress/arrange it however you want... oftentimes i find that using similar filter envelope settings to the amp envelope works fairly well. but that's just getting into personal taste. :)

now after all that talk about drum synthesis, i am off to play with my new Battery 3 that arrived today. w00t! ^_^

Cool c.23, the thought was there! ... you cant have too many assistophiles on a thread :hihi:

Yeah, filtered white noise is essentially all you need .. I do like to add a bit of a tone though .... to give it a bit of a ring ... always best if theres a seperate c/o and res for the tone though ... cos simple waveforms dont quite do enough.

The nice thing about oatmeal is that the drawable user wave works really well! ... so for a tone, you can start with a sine/saw whatever, and 'rough it up' good and proper ..... set it at the desired pitch.... and add it in. Play around with its vol and pitch, drag its vol back and forth til it sits with the filtered noise, and an extra bit of tuned metalicosity can result!

Post

+100 cool points because metalicosity is a good word.
