Yes, it did. How can you say it didn't come out when it did? October 13th, Pro-C went VST3 according to their site. It received further updates over the next couple of months to improve things more.

As I said, Virsyn has a couple of products as well, and more are in the works for them and others.

So yeah, anyways, I got my Cubase 5 today. Everything is installed, but I had to run to work(where I'm at now). So I'll get to play with it in a little bit.

I really do think I'm going to be sucked in by Halion Symphonic Orchestra for the price. Man, this "technique" for Steinberg may just work. Why, oh why!!!!! I have VSL. But having an entire orchestra set up already for VST Expression is mighty tempting.

There are some Halion One sounds with expression maps also. Load the demo expression project and you'll hear a few. The guitars are nice.

The expression maps certainly can add another layer of realism to the midi thing.

Yeah, I saw that. I still need to run through things. But I'm looking forward to creating VST Expression maps for my VSL stuff. Though they are supposed to be supporting it sometime in the future, so they may beat me to it.

But you can never have enough orchestra stuff. And $99 for a 11GB library, 16 bit or not, is a great value.

Hey Brent.

Late for most of the conversation - but read your first post and you mentioned some pretty tasty features.

I ban myself from purchasing tools like Cubase for various reasons - especially now that I'm working predominantly in Linux. But I know that I'd be VERY interested in some of the features you mentioned being added to my host of choice as you were hitting on some of the things I like to look at (except maybe the built-in audio editor).

Have fun with the new purchase - may it bring you much completed music.

Just out of interest, why?

As a Cubase hater of old, I used to look on and think Steinberg were very arrogant. I based this on rumours they are censorial on their forum, they appeared to be resting on their previous acheivements, didn't have the generosity to provide a demo, and ... well, the dongle.

Then I spotted that the developers I supported and considered provided great user support - Ableton - were actually also very arrogant, with an often rude attitude towards user FR, inflated pricing (Live is way over-priced now), marketing that hyped the product far beyond the reality, etc.

Somebody mentioned in one of these threads that the Cubase 5 marketing videos were bad, citring the lack of racial mix among the presenters (a racist comment in itself, of course). I actually liked those videos BECAUSE they were so rubbish: the point is, Steinberg resisted getting in a bunch of super-smooth presenters, and allowed their development team to take part and speak for themselves. What I saw was a bunch of nerdy people that are totally committed to making Cubase the best software around, and that impressed me.

Your snarky attitude about how reaper does everything that cubase does in naive at best, and really pretty much just makes you sound foolish even to reaper users!

I think many of us look forward to the day when a small bunch of Reaper users kinda grow out of this absurd and ill-informed trolling. The problem is, as soon as one or two of them do move on, others seem to take their place...

It's something that is obviously not understood by everyone. Let me put it to you this way, if someone told you that your 800USD steinberg key was invalid and deleted your account, would you be pissed? What a mind-f**k.......I'm still not over it.

Anyways, I'm not the only one.....but alas.......cubase is what I use and It's what I'm going to use........till reaper gets better....... (ducks)

I think it's got something to do with the zero advertising budget and the replacement in the form of this sticky in the Cockos forum which, when opened, gives off cyber-spores that directly attach themselves to the fan-boi gene in Reaperites, making them post uncontrollably about Reaper in an effort to please the Grim One.

It's the most sensible explanation of the phenomenon and is a terrible affliction for our comrades to suffer. They should be pitied, not hated.

That'll be me, but it wasn't a racial comment, but more of a critique of the dominance of the coluor white in the presentation vidoes... Not the colour of the presenters skin... Anyway my comment was about the heavy german accent in the "Now that is so cool". The video seemed to be targeted at a young audience, and IMO failing epicly. It's quite funny, but not really in the way Steinberg wanted....

Ok, I've spent a little time messing around with Cubase 5 FINALLY. Now, remember that this was a limited time and I'm still kind of sick. So this wasn't a heavy session or anything. Just noodling around and getting a feel for things.

The biggest thing I must say is that the interface ROCKS. So clean, yet so customizable, yet so full of features. I know this is all down to opinion, but in the case of Cubase, they just seem to have gotten it right. No need for skinning abilities(though you can adjust various program colors in some ways of course). You can have your skinning/theming abilities <insert host name here, like Sonar, Reaper, etc.> I'll take the default C5 interface over most others any day of the week. It's just a joy to look at, IMO.

Some things do take some time to find, but I've found a couple of "gem" features during my fiddling around.

First of all, screensets can save a window in maximized form. So getting from whatever window you are in back to the main window is as easy as assigning a hotkey to just the main window maximized. Do that with a couple of your most frequented windows, and the resizing thing isn't so bad. Also, having the button window where you can just click buttons to open or close each one is a plus. Though I don't know if I'll use it or not.

Next, and this is my favorite unknown feature so far: ruler tracks ANYWHERE!!! I absolutely LOVE how I can insert as many ruler tracks as I want, and put them anywhere in the track structure that I want, and have each one of them display different units of measurement. And perhaps the best part of all is that each and every one of them can be used for zooming, just like the top ruler! Drag your mouse on any ruler you have anywhere and zoom. I think this is cool because you could, for instance, insert a ruler into a folder track with all your drum tracks, and it shows only when you open the folder. Or whatever. Very cool little feature that was unexpected. I haven't even messed with all the other track types, but only the main ones like audio and instrument tracks. But this was cool.

Next, nested folders. Thank you Steinberg. I know this isn't anything original, but some apps don't do this and I don't know why.

Next, when you have the mixer and the main view showing, and you select a track in one view that isn't currently visible in the other view, it jumps to that track in the other view. Basically, the selection in the mixer and main view follow each other if you want. This is one of the few features of Reaper that I was wanting in Sonar.

I tried the Variaudio thing with a horrible vocal track I did recently when messing around. Kind of my "vocal tuning test track". VariAudio is actually very complete and flexible, but it's going to take some getting used to. I can't say whether it sounds better or worse than Melodyne, or completes feature for feature. But I will surely use VariAudio for many tweaks. The integration is the selling point here of course.

I'm definitely going to have to adjust my key commands a bit. I thought there were supposed to be key command presets included? The preset menu doesn't show anything for that. Is is supposed to? There were a few menus throughout the program that were empty as a matter of fact. But I don't fully understand what all of them are yet, so we'll see.

The Halion One soundset actually isn't too bad for some bread and butter sounds. I haven't installed the second disk of sounds yet, so I don't know what I'm missing out on. But I'll do that later, along with the two disks for Halion Symphonic Orchestra(which I just know is going to end up taking my $100 for the upgrade! I feel the temptation already!).

One question though. There is supposed to be the grand piano from the Yamaha S90. Is that on the second disk, the one called "VST Sound Collection"?

Well, more later. But these were little things I discovered as I went along. I'll be logging plenty more hours in C5 over the next few days. So I'll share as I find things! But so far, so good!
